In the silence

The first part of a triptych I’ve been working on for some time now. Each piece is / will be executed in a different style but each tells a part of the same journey and story.

A contemplative and spiritual piece for me and hopefully for you as well.

Thank you

A life drawing (10th Sep)

I felt rusty this day and couldn’t get in the zone. I was also too slow hence the legs not being quite right. But there / here you go.

Thank you

Fleur

A life drawing session - my first for I won’t say how long… How I’ve missed this. I just wished I’d been able to stand back and get my proportions a bit better.

Thank you

Fort William way (a one day study)

When working on a detailed piece I often lose the ability to be objective, so, rattling off a quick study (such as this one here) I find refreshing and a respite from said detailed piece. I also all too easily obsess over detailed pieces; I think too much. Thankfully, not actually when working on pieces, but when walking, when washing up….
Furthermore, it is always a joy to study moody mountains and their skies. They speak to me - very much so.

Thank you (and to the mountains)

The Undying Light

I did write a caption / commentary to accompany this piece but I found myself going over things I’ve already and recently said, and I fear a good number of times too. Therefore, I’ll just let the piece speak for itself.

Thank you

Yesterday’s walk (Colwick Park, Nottingham)

As mentioned previously, these walks and these sketches are all about loosening up and hopefully knocking walls down in my practice. I’m still envisaging a number of future pieces with a detailed focal point with looser style surroundings.
This time, I derived inspiration from two great artists: @paulfowlerart’s work - his mark making, blocking in of colour / tone and general style, and @freshlymixedhues - in particular, her remarkable art journaling, doing away with rules and subsequent loose sketches. These artists’ work not only speak but sing to me.
So, inspired and artistically energised, I set out in my ongoing ‘loosening up’ adventures equipped with my trusty HB and 5B pencils, but charcoal and chalk pencils too.

Thank you

Firelight

I will not ramble on with this one, as is often my wont, but instead share this simple commentary: Light can dispel any amount of darkness. Just one candle can do it, or in this case, a blazing fire.

Thank you

Sketches from yesterday’s walk

Early this morning while walking through my garden, I wondered why I’m pursuing a looser style in my sketching. Is it because my current studio pieces are taking quite a while and are detailed etc. or is it simply because I want to get back to my sketching style of old / art college days? (Two pics of which I have included following images 1-9.)

I settled on ‘Stop overthinking and just see what happens. Go with it.’ Moreover, I’m driven and impassioned to explore loose sketching, and no small part inspired by and emboldened by great artists such as @harrystooshinoff.

Perhaps I can combine the two (loose and detailed), i.e., produce pieces with a detailed focal point and ‘looser’ surroundings? Something I’ve tried in previous pieces, e.g., ‘Danny of Dartmoor’ (final piece above and currently being exhibited in the NSoA Summer Exhibition).

So, this is pretty much what I was thinking when out sketching yesterday as well as when strolling in the garden... Aah anyway, enough of my ramblings, and as ever - Thank you.
