@visionqueest out now! Some lovely builds on this job with a wonderful team, feels soooo long ago! 🤖 🎬 #propmodeller #propmaking by @danielgubba_art

Kang’s boots for Antman and The Wasp: Quantumania. Working in the costume dept was an interesting change from normal prop jobs. Using a lot of transferable skills and picking up new ones along the way. Assembling some of the costume pieces, like these boots, was a meticulous job that took a long time and a lot of concentration but I actually found very satisfying all the same. There was never enough glass headed pins and we were constantly buying more in! 😅 #costumedept #costumeprops #quantumanía #kangtheconqueror #filmboots by @danielgubba_art

Spent today on a one day leather making course @diamondawlworkshop ! I’ve never worked with leather before but know a lot of prop makers who have so it was great to get some experience in a new discipline! Made a passport holder, it’s far from perfect but learnt a huge amount and was a great first foray into a new area of crafting! 📐✏️ ✂️ #leatherwork #handcrafted #leathercraft #handmade #makers #craftsmanship #leathergoods #craftskills #creativedays #handtools by @danielgubba_art

🐉 🎬 Goin through photos from last year, here’s a few pics from my desk on House of the Dragon. A really fun job, every day was different! I was a small part of a big team working on lots of pieces that many had a hand in creating. #bigprops #propdept #houseofthedragon #scenicartist #setdressing #propmaker #modelmaker #fantasy #workshop #propmodeller #workspace #scenic by @danielgubba_art

Pillar Drill I made way back for Norman Picklestripes. As Norm was a handy man he had a lot of tools. We decided they’d all be teal, definitely influenced by Makita, but also as it stood out against his green and the warmer tones of the house interior. I started by making a mock up and using a puppet hand as reference to work out the dimensions so that everything sat comfortably together. I changed a few bits like the feed handle for practicality and altered the size. Once everything was agreed I made the final piece out of chemiwood, brass, styrene and various unusual bits of plastic I always kept hold of for adding detail, such as the driving motor which I think was a lid off something originally but had a good design that worked for the drill. I made the column and drill stock sections out of incremental brass so that they could be heightened and lowered without stratching paint off as the finish was the bare metal sanded dull. I textured the surfaces that were to be teal by stippling emulsion before masking up and spray painting. Further down the line during shooting we ended up duplicating the set so I made a second one. Even though the look of the show was fairly cartoony and stylised I stayed fairly close to the original reference image. A fun prop to make in a series of tools I made for Norm! 🛠️ 🪚 🧰 #propdesigning #miniature #tvshow #normanpicklestripes #propmakers #artdept #stopmotion #kidstv #props #makingof #animation #stylised #prototype #designprocess #preproduction #madefortv #miniatureworld #stopmo #miniaturecommunity #handmade #scratchbuild #pillardrill #tinytools by @danielgubba_art

The crib I made for episode 1 of The House on Netflix. This was a very satisfying prop to make as it required a lot of time sat weaving thread along the structure, dead relaxing. As with all the sets, props and puppets for episode 1 the finish was material based, so for the basket weave I used cotton thread. I started by making formers based off the design which I think had been printed to scale so I could just cut them out and trace around mdf. Next I made a rib-like structure from thick ali wire, sturdy enough to hold its form but with enough play to slot them all together. One thing I found as I was assembling was that having cut down cocktail sticks in the holes really helped me remember where they all were. 😅 So when it came time to slot it together I could find them all again! (I figured this out the hard way…) Once I’d finished the weave I stained the whole thing to give the look of a basket weave, whilst still retaining the material finish. The rocking frame was made from a combination of laser cut mdf and ema rods I think, which was then weaved over with thread on the edges but had material ironed on to the main structure, we used the Iron-on method for a lot of props on this episode. A little mattress and quilt were added which I did not make. A fun little prop to make, I made a number of props for this episode and I found working with different material a lot more enjoyable than I expected, much cleaner than most of the jobs I normally do too! 😁 #propmaking #stopmotionanimation #handmade #basketweave #miniature #thehouse #propmaker #stopmo #madeinmanchester #miniaturecrib #setsandprops #artdept #designprocess #stopmotion #behindthescenes #modelmaker #animationart #creativeprocess #minicommunity by @danielgubba_art

🐉 🎬🐉🎬🐉 Well this job was a lot of fun, for an awesome show with a great crew. #houseofthedragon #propmaker #hbo #artdept #propsdepartment by @danielgubba_art

The oven I made for The Sound Collector. After getting the reference images I mocked up a foam board maquette using the fast cast stand in to get the scale right. It also had to tie in with the height of the kitchen units that were being built at the same time, so that all had to be decided on first. After that I began building the oven, like the fridge I considered vac forming certain elements but decided instead to use a combination of mdf that I sealed with multiple layers of shellac and styrene. The rack in the oven and grill shelf was made of brass rods I soldered together and the door handles and knobs were 3D printed. Like all the sound collector props and dressings, the oven had a second hand, salvaged feel to it with dented and worn surfaces. Like the fridge, magnets held the door shut. ❄️❄️❄️ Fridge I made for The Sound Collector. Made of mdf, styrene and Ali wire for the shelves. I also made the back removable for any shots from within the fridge that while not asked for always ends up happening in stop mo. I originally was going to make mdf formers and then vac form the carcass but for such a simple shape I decided to use the mdf itself with styrene clad and filled on the sharper sides. I also made a note of all the dimensions of the fridge as we invariably have to duplicate certain sets and trying to get hold of the original once filming has begun can be tricky. As with all the sound collector’s decor the fridge had a second-hand, salvaged style to it, I copied the design from a reference photo and bashed and dented the outside to give a worn finish. The shelf dimensions were dictated by the size of milk bottles and various food props so they had to be decided on before I could make the shelves for the door especially and space them out accordingly. The inside of the door had magnets imbedded so the door would shut firmly and not risk creeping open during filming! The handles were 3D printed. 🌙✨ Finally framed up this skinned, alien pelt… (Can still make out the animator’s grubby finger marks. 😅) No idea where the ears have gone, hopefully they’ll turn up at some point! #clangers #spacemouse #knittedpuppet #stopmotionanimation #taxidermy by @danielgubba_art

Birdtable Refurb - Part 2. At this stage much of the main structure was finished, it was just a case of doing a few fiddly but important details to finish everything off. The side archways needed cladding and crossbeams attaching, like a lot of the rebuild I made these chunkier as the last set had been one of the first things to breakdown (I think mainly from wood pigeons trying to perch on them). I Also took the stand apart as, although it was in pretty good condition, it had become loose and a few sections needed replacing. I also remade and slightly tweaked the inner arch sections which I had held onto when I took the original birdtable apart. I added a bit of surface detail to these this time around but didn’t stain the wood as I’m hoping (like last time) they will age and build up a weathered patina naturally again, they look a bit pink at the mo… One of the most crucial elements in finishing off the roof was the top cladding as this would keep the whole roof section safe from water and minimise any internal water build up. For this I used old copper pipe that was sawed lengthways and beaten into sheets. I quite like the rustic finish of beaten metal but what I didn’t realise was how well it would catch the light, this might fade as the surface starts to oxidise but for now it looks great. Next I added a trim around the base, I kept this fairly flush with the base as last time I had given it a decent lip, but it tended to fill with dirt and water so in the interest of longevity I thought it better to keep the base fairly level, the less tight corners the better. Finally it was just a case of securing the scaffolding pole to the ground. I used broken bits of brick to hold it in place within the hole I dug whilst I tried to get the pole level, then filled it with cement. I painted the pole a sagey, washed-out blue to compliment the planting around the base of the pole and not stand out too much but blend into the surrounding foliage. The cornus around the base will loose all its foliage in winter and the exposed stems will turn bright red for winter interest, so it’ll be fun to see how it works against the birdtable above.
