inside the left box were so many note cards- so many worries and fears. in the other box, not a single note- devoid of words of encouragement.
equipped with a pen and a sheet of paper, i proceeded to sit and write encouraging notes. i kept a photo of them and dropped the notes in the box for others to find.
as i walked away, i reflected on those two boxes.
i imagined an area within myself packed full of my worries and fears. i imagined another area within myself meant to collect words of encouragement.
in writing each note, i found the words i needed to hear. they’re now collected within myself for future reference. as for the notes in the box, i hope they each find their way into the hands of someone who may also need to hear those words.
and i share them here with you, take what you need 💌 taken in Brooklyn Heights by @danieliandrea

first time on a stage at an open mic night, courtesy of @nuyoricanpoetscafe and @barriobx 🤎

just a white girl named Danieli Andrea Trujillo
Danielle? Daniela? Tru-what?
Trujello? Trujillio?
naturally, they ask me “where are you from?”
well, I’m from Florida. Born in Orlando.
Now I live in Brooklyn.
but no, that’s not what they want to know
they want to know
why is my name different
and when they find out I speak Spanish
then I gotta explain, my parents are Colombian
and they say “ah, tu te vez americana!”
“yo pensaba que eras gringa!”
they say “I thought you were white!”
well I am white, aren’t I?
born here, but my dad is Carlos Alberto Trujillo de La Cumbre, Colombia
raised here, but my mom is Janet Evenyde Trujillo de Pereira, Colombia
am I just a white girl?
I used to wonder but deep down I know
soy Danieli Andrea Trujillo

I attended @langstonsparlor ‘s monthly poetry workshop this past Saturday
I left with nourishment in my soul and a new poem to my name

I’m sorry I know by Danieli Andrea

I’m sorry I know I disappeared time and time again
I went futher out and you went further in

I’m sorry I know you deserved my attention, my love and affection

I know it’s been a long time feeling stuck, trapped, almost like you couldn’t breathe
but I finally found you, deep within me
You’ve been hiding away and I’m here to set you free

I’m sorry I know you’ve been hurting
and loving others felt healing
but true love is here first, and that love is freeing

I’m sorry I know I’ve been loving them and I haven’t been loving me
but those days are over, I’m here to set us free
from the captivity of loving others before me by @danieliandrea

El Duelo by Danieli Andrea

As a child, I grew up carrying a grief I didn’t know how to name. Today, I am a woman learning to heal those wounds and give myself the love I spent so many years seeking from others.

a vacant space hides in me
way down, deep within
this space is old, dark and grim
it’s a space i’ve never wanted to step foot in
i’ve done everything to avoid
the depths of this void

but it’s becoming clear

i’m
supposed
to
remain
here

so i sit in stillness, gripped by fear
as the fear subsides, i feel sadness appear

i can no longer escape it the way I have been
so i step further in and i begin to examine
the weight of this perplexing sorrow i carry deep within
i uncover my younger self locked in it’s prison

deep in this void I’ve been trying to avoid
i find my inner child with her heart destroyed
the loss of her mother left her feeling completely devoid
and she can’t seem to find a way to fill this void

she’s been here all this time, caged by grief
her mom left to live with god
and she’s been here in utter disbelief
trying to seek out love from others as a form of relief

but the love she craves can only come from me
god’s love has strengthened me and has given me the key
to finally be able to heal her and set her free by @danieliandrea
