Desert Mustang series! As I was working on these prints @incahoots I naturally hung them in a grid to observe, scrutinize and make changes, rearrange. I always trust my instincts and so felt the presentation for this exhibition at @suma_museum had already been decided. These nine prints, out of 20 or so, tell a story bookended between two landscapes: about time, life, changes, independence.

Thanks @incahoots for the space and time (highly recommend this residency!) @suma_museum and my dear friend @aziza.abdieva who did the stellar framing. And @jxfussell and John Fahey, who I exclusively listened to while making these.

This exhibition is up through March so if you are in the area, I’d love to met up to view it. I’m just a short drive from some incredible parks.

Elusive Terrains is up! I really love this show in @kimperialfineart’s new to me space in 49 Geary. It’s up through the end of August.
My favorite part is about half the pieces are framed vs. unframed. The framed pieces have a larger presence but I like leaving some works “naked” without the glass barrier.

Fall is yellow is southwest Utah. Aspens and Chamisa. Kiki and Willow. A WIP. My phone took a lot of out of focus, dreamy abstract videos and photos from inside my pocket, that are better than most of the photos I meant to take. (Last video) The start of fall felt rougher than most because I was enjoying summer so much. Along with the start of the semester, I faced a few health issues that are still in process of getting resolved. But momentum is picking up again 💛🌼 by @daniellerante

Willow and I competed in our first LD -limited distance- endurance race this weekend! I’m very proud of her (and me), it was over 26 miles at around 9000 ft elevation through the alpine forests near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was that Type 2 fun when around mile 18 of trotting we were both so over it, but pushed through to the end! Thanks to my amazing team for keeping us going and an extra teammate we picked up during the race. We came in 9th place with a time of 4 hours and 45 minutes. Most importantly Willow passed her health check at the end! No health checks for humans though hahah. After a few weeks I’ll forgot how hard this was and how much chaffing the nether regions endured and sign up for another one. Willow was so good and I’m proud of how far our relationship has come. Except for the many escape attempts she made at night and the broken halters and lead ropes, she was the perfect girl.

Some Light is Older than Mountains
39”x 60”
Ink and mica on Japanese paper

After completing this drawing, I was researching Carl Sagan when a friend pointed me toward a rather “interesting” song he once made. I don’t recommend even trying to listen to it, but it’s on Spotify if you are brave. I’m glad he pointed it out, because it made me realize that maybe I wasn’t thinking about outer space so much as I was thinking about properties of light. That sent me down a different path. Since I spent time in Yosemite and the Sierras this summer, I eventually found my way to John Muir and his writing and I like his phrase “range of light” when describing the Sierras. However, I found this passage from Travels in Alaska and visual of living in a dewdrop really resonated with me.

“When we contemplate the whole globe as one great dewdrop, striped and dotted with continents and islands, flying through space with other stars all singing and shining together as one, the whole universe appears as an infinite storm of beauty.”

This drawing may or may not be about that, I’m still figuring it out. by @daniellerante

Last of these drawings for now. I had planned to finish this at home but I’m holding off and calling it finished. The negative space and emptiness feel right in contrast to the others. I’m spacing on what the name of this rock formation is so it’s untitled until a future date.

Another one from Canyonlands Research Center/Dugout Ranch. I hope the magical qualities of this place come through in the drawings.

I made a small series of colored pencil drawings while at the Canyonlands Research Center/ Dugout Ranch with @utahmoca.
This one is called Finn and the Sundial.
The Redd family has worked the ranch since the 1800s and in the 1990s Heidi Redd gave it to the @nature_utah to protect the land and later continue research effects on the land in regards to conservation and ranching. It was lovingly/jokingly described as like the fictional Yellowstone ranch, but they were nice.
Finn is Kristen Redd’s dog, another incredible woman that works with the Conservancy and Bears Ears National Memorial.
From her, we learned about seasonal creeks and efforts to raise the water table under the Sundial, and willows to mark that the efforts were working. We danced together at midnight under the full moon.
The day I was about to ship this drawing to Kristen, we learned that the Redds moved the horses off the property and were preparing to evacuate from unpredictable fires. Yesterday, we learned that the Babylon Fire, the largest in the country had moved onto their property, and is threatening to destroy the ranch, one of the most unique and special places I have had to privilege to learn from.
Today I am keeping them in my heart, and just wish I could do more. ❤️‍🩹 by @daniellerante

Paintbrush Moon
39” x 45”
Ink and mica on okawara paper

When I began this piece it was with all the blooming red desert paintbrushes I was witnessing during twilight rides through the canyon in mind. It being too hot during the day, we would saddle up and ride in the evening and then unsaddle in the dark under the moon. Tonight though, the reds and oranges tell a different story to me. I’m checking my fire watch app and have my old photo albums, special rocks and treasures and the ashes of my pets packed in my car, just in case. I think we will be just fine and it will all go back to blooming paintbrushes under the moon again.
