Daniel Malarkey is pleased to announce “When You Are Bound to Nothing, You Are Bound to Everybody,” a group exhibition of paintings, sculptures, textiles, photography, video, and works on paper at Palazzo Lezze, Venice, opening September 12, 2026 during the Venice Film Festival.

The exhibition’s title comes from a line spoken by Irene (Ingrid Bergman) in Roberto Rossellini’s Europa ‘51—the neorealist masterpiece that originally premiered in Venice, going into its 75th anniversary year. Ultimately the exhibition is a new retelling of the film.

I am thinking today about how controversial this film was in 1952 when it came out and how the themes are as difficult for humanity to face as they were then, as well as the off-screen controversy. Artworks by Anthea Hamilton, photo Eleonora Agostini, and Anna Calleja, photo Andrea Rossetti.

I have my morning coffee at Bar Bepi in Lido, they ask me how many eggs I want each morning 2, 3, even 4 or 5. We discuss how much salt and pepper, and they bring me coffees. I read Rilke’s Venice given to me by Sheila, Claudia and Renate at my opening - they write a beautiful note in dedication, “so grateful you lured us to Venice.”

Rilke writes “over the silent perilousness repairing of eyes which some communion secretly unites with her canals, so that the sea rises and ebbs and changes in them.”

Back today to live the story again, every day, standing in the Palazzo…waiting for those who are ready to rip off the veil and see truth that was always waiting for them.

When I found out in April that this exhibition was not possible, I searched my soul, and decided I had to summon all the forces of the universe to make it happen.

I hope a streaming service in the UK and Europe can bring this film back to a greater public. #robertorossellini #ingridbergman #europa51 by @danielmalarkey

Daniel Malarkey’s group exhibition at Palazzo Lezze in Venice takes its title from a line spoken by Ingrid Bergman in Roberto Rossellini’s ‘Europa ‘51’, at the moment her character sees her life clearly for the first time. The exhibition brings together works by Adrian Piper, Cosima von Bonin, Anthea Hamilton, Celia Paul, Claudia Alarcón & Silät, Anna Calleja, Paz Errázuriz and Derek Jarman, alongside Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Mark Tobey, Piero Marussig and Luis Caballero.

It runs from 12 September to 27 October 2026 at MALARKEY - Palazzo Lezze, Campo Santo Stefano 2949, Venice. The exhibition is open Monday through Sunday from 2pm to 7pm. The exhibition is free. Booking is required.

The water and the net
oil on panel, 20x25cm, 2026

This painting is one of the first paintings I made at Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris. I arrived on 7th of April 2026, to this 60s building, a utopian post war project that dreamed of artists from all over the world, of all ages, of all disciplines living and working in the heart of Paris. Sometimes, these dreams come true and last for 60 years! I was stuck when I arrived and slowly unstuck as I journalled and painted my way through each day. When you live on a small island, you are constantly in touch with your child, your teen and your lost adult. I found someone new here.

In Rossellini’s “Europa 51” Irene, played by Ingrid Bergman, undergoes a transformation as she moves from grief, to abandon, to a sensitisation to do good in the world. She becomes utopic in her unwillingness to conform to ideologies at the time (Catholicism, Communism, or industrialism). This drives her mad in the eyes of others and drives her to an inner peace and sense of conviction in herself - in the end she is sent to an asylum.

“When You Are Bound to Nothing, You Are Bound to Everybody,” is a quote from Irene in the film, a dissolution of the self that leads to a wide empathy for others. Daniel Malarkey uses this line as his title: as a way into his moving exhibition at Palazzo Lezze, Venice. This is a show about being open to the world - its pain and its sorrow and its beauty. That sensitivity can be a gift as much as a burden: can be danced to in Berlin like Adrian Piper, or cut out of Volcanic rock like Anthea Hamilton or cast in bronze like my mother’s shoes, ‘’some for my mother, some for me’’.

If you find yourself in Venice, do go and see this show and many of my works made in Paris over this precious time!

New Installation views of When You Are Bound to Nothing, You Are Bound to Everybody, curated by Daniel Malarkey, now open at Palazzo Lezze, Campo Santo Stefano, Venice, until 27 October 2026. Photos by Andrea Rossetti.

The exhibition is a retelling of Roberto Rossellini’s Europa ‘51, starring Ingrid Bergman, told through works by Adrian Piper, Cosima von Bonin, Anthea Hamilton, Celia Paul, Claudia Alarcón & Silät, Anna Calleja, Paz Errázuriz and Derek Jarman, alongside Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Mark Tobey, Piero Marussig and Luis Caballero.

Open daily 14:00 to 19:00, booking required.

The rooms that hold the exhibition are the result of a restoration conducted by FWR, now @una_unless which set out to return the 15th century Palazzo Lezze to its original architectural dignity after decades of alterations. The design took the building’s history as its point of departure. The unusually low ground floor tells us the house was never built for trade, and rather than facing a canal it opens onto a campo, a kind of open urban space that was only just beginning to matter in Venice when the palazzo was built in the first half of the 1400s. Along the way the work uncovered rare fifteenth century painted beams and late eighteenth century ceiling decorations, which now define the newly laid out rooms as an exhibition space.

We did it. The impossible show that was not going to happen so many times - it is real and it is exhilarating. I’ll be in Venice most of the time until 27 October so reach out to schedule a trip. Huge thanks to the women who inspire me everyday and who walk the world at a rhythm that is their own. As we dance to Adrian Piper in the exhibition our feet take flight and with Cosima von Bonin we swim. Happy New Year Happy New World.

Opening next weekend :a group exhibition in Venice with new works by Anthea Hamilton. Plan your visit to the opening of ‘When You Are Bound to Nothing, You Are Bound to Everybody’ curated by Daniel Malarkey on Saturday 12, September for the Private View between 17:00 - 19:30 at Palazzo Lezze, Campo Santo Stefano, Venice.

In 2024, Anthea Hamilton met with curator Daniel Malarkey about an exhibition he wanted to present in Venice to open during the Venice Film Festival the year of the art biennale : the show would take as its story Europa ’51 by Roberto Rosselini. As part of the discussion Malarkey talked about Martin Scorsese’s explanation that Rosselini’s film Germany Year Zero (1948) was about the loss of faith, Stromboli (1950) was about a person looking for faith, and that Europa ’51 was about someone who finds faith. In the entrance to the exhibition, Anthea Hamilton’s ‘Lava Leg Chair’ is the sole work in the exhibition that relates directly to Stromboli, the film, a necessary start to the journey of the exhibition. In the last scene of Stromboli (spoiler alert), the heroine is crossing the volanic mountain to escape a life she can no longer live, the film ends without telling us if she makes it across or not. Lava Leg Chair, based on the artist’s body, one of her most famous bodies of work, in this iteration brings the heroine of the film (played by Ingrid Bergman) to life in Venice to start her next story, Europa ’51.
