It’s easy to overlook the power of a good plate. Beautiful plates, a nice glass, a comfortable chair. The light, the sound, the feel of the room. It’s not too loud. Is it too quiet? There’s fresh flowers on the bar, that’s a good sign. The menu feels nice, looks like new paper. That’s bone, or is it eggshell? The lettering is a nice touch. Flimsy menus, now that’s a recession indicator. Furniture can be another. Rigid plywood, what were those hipsters thinking. It’s like they never sat for a meal longer than forty-five minutes even though they stood in line for an hour.

Most customers have an expectation of what a product, service, or brand should feel like at various price points. The higher the price, the more supporting evidence they need to see and feel. Operators tend to judge their product from the inside out. They know the ingredients, sourcing, labor, and cost required to produce it. To them, the value is obvious. Customers, on the other hand, judge from the outside in. They evaluate what they observe and feel.

These details don’t define quality, but they shape how we perceive it. They give us cues about what something is worth and whether or not its value matches the associated cost. by @danielpatrick

There’s nothing generic about this interior space so it only made sense to create a custom type treatment to match. This is one in a series of lettering pieces designed to elevate the digital presentation of @lesjeannerenee’s portfolio work. It’s not enough to simply pick a font, every detail needs to be considered.

Complaints about price are often not about the price, they're about the gap between what customers pay and the value they received.

This is the difference between a $12 martini and a $25 martini. Value signals (like the tray, simple coaster, and sidecar on ice) make the quality easier to recognize, and lead us to believe one thing is worth more than the other. This is where most businesses lose value without realizing it.
