⚽ Pelé — 1958 Editora Aquarela Ltda. Rookie Card (Signed)

A slight departure from cricket to celebrate the FIFA World Cup Final this weekend and one of the greatest athletes in sporting history.

Although Pelé appeared on a handful of exceptionally rare regional issues in 1957, the 1958 Editora Aquarela card is widely recognized by collectors as one of his iconic rookie cards. Released the same year he announced himself to the world, Pelé made history in the 1958 FIFA World Cup Final on June 29, 1958, when the 17-year-old scored twice to lead Brazil past host nation Sweden 5–2 to capture its first World Cup title. Signed by Pelé and authenticated by PSA/DNA, this card commemorates the beginning of an extraordinary legacy.

Don't let the grade deceive you. This example is graded PSA 4 with a Gem Mint 10 autograph, placing it among the highest-graded signed examples known. Across both the blue-back and black-back variations, only three signed examples have been graded higher by PSA, and none are graded above a PSA 5.

For me, this card represents more than a collectible. It's a piece of sporting history celebrating an athlete whose influence transcended football and inspired generations around the world.

If you could own the signed rookie card of any sporting legend, who would it be?

2011 Cricket Attax Virat Kohli Gold Foil | PSA 6 / Auto 9

A rare piece of Virat Kohli collecting history.

This 2011 Cricket Attax Gold Foil features Kohli’s full “V Kohli” signature, characteristic of his early autograph style from 2011 to 2013.

To date, this is the only autographed example of the card graded by PSA. It received a PSA 6 card grade and a PSA 9 autograph grade.

From the early days of Cricket Attax to one of the most recognizable signatures in cricket, this card captures a unique moment in Kohli’s collecting history.

Which Virat Kohli card or autograph would be your grail?

🏏 2017 Tap ’N’ Play Steve Smith — PSA 10

Completing the modern-era Fab Four.

Steve Smith is one of the defining Australian cricketers of his generation and one of the four batsmen who came to dominate the international game alongside Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson.

Limited to just 200 copies, this 2017 Tap ’N’ Play card is graded PSA 10, with the PSA 10 population currently standing at just one.

What makes the Fab Four particularly interesting as a collecting group is how different their careers and styles have been, despite emerging around the same era and occupying such similar places in the game.

Which of the Fab Four is your favorite?

🏏 1928 Ogden’s Don Bradman — PSA 5 & PSA 4 | Silver Diamond

One of the most iconic early Don Bradman cards.

The 1928 Ogden’s dates to the beginning of Bradman’s rise to prominence and is one of the earliest cards featuring the man who would become one of cricket’s greatest legends.

Nearly a century later, examples of this card are increasingly difficult to find in strong condition. These two examples are graded PSA 5 and PSA 4, and both received Silver Diamond designations from MBA.

Issued at the dawn of Bradman’s international career, the 1928 Ogden’s captures a young Bradman before he had become the global cricket icon he would eventually become.

What is your favorite Don Bradman card?

🏏 Sir Jack Hobbs — c.1905–1910 Signed Postcard | PSA/DNA Authenticated

A remarkable piece of early cricket history featuring Sir Jack Hobbs, one of the greatest batsmen the game has ever produced.

Dating to approximately 1905–1910, this postcard features Hobbs early in his legendary career and is signed by Hobbs himself. The autograph has been authenticated by PSA/DNA and is housed in a blue PSA/DNA slab.

Known as “The Master,” Hobbs finished his first-class career with more than 61,000 runs and 199 first-class centuries, both extraordinary achievements that have stood the test of time.

His career spanned nearly three decades, from his first-class debut in 1905 through his final season in 1934. In 1953, Hobbs became the first professional cricketer to be knighted for his services to the game.

A signed piece dating from the very beginning of Hobbs' remarkable career, connecting the earliest era of cricket collecting with one of the game's all-time greats.

Which cricket legend's autograph would you most want to add to your collection?

🏏 Brian Lara — England vs. West Indies, 375 Match Ticket | April 18, 1994

One of the most unique pieces in my collection.

This is the match ticket from Day 3 of England vs. West Indies at the Antigua Recreation Grounds on April 18, 1994, signed by Brian Lara and authenticated by PSA/DNA.

This was the match in which Lara scored 375, setting the record for the highest individual score in Test cricket at the time. His legendary performance surpassed the previous 36-year-old record of 365 not out, held by his fellow countryman, Sir Garfield Sobers. Lara spent more than 12 hours at the crease, turning one of the great innings in cricket history into a moment that would be remembered for decades.

Having the actual ticket from that historic match, signed by Lara himself, makes this a particularly special piece of cricket memorabilia. The PSA/DNA blue label provides authentication for Lara’s signature while preserving a tangible piece of the day the record was set. (Still waiting for PSA to start authenticating Antigua tickets 😂)

Nearly 30 years later, the ticket is a reminder of one of the greatest individual performances in the history of the game.

What is the one piece of cricket memorabilia you would love to own?

🏏 1929 Sykes Autograph Bats Advertising Card — Don Bradman

Don’t let the grade deceive you.

This is the only copy of this card ever graded by PSA, regardless of grade. A true Population 1.

The reverse appears to bear a stamp from George H. Sutton & Co. of Adelaide. George Sutton was a sporting agent in South Australia, and the stamp raises an interesting possibility about the card's journey nearly a century ago. It may have been distributed through Sutton's agency as part of its relationship with Sykes Autograph Bats.

Issued in 1929, this card dates to the very early stages of Bradman's career, making it a fascinating piece of his collecting history. At a time when Bradman was still establishing himself as Australia's next great batsman, cards like this were helping promote his image to the public.

That's what makes this card so special to me. The grade may be modest, but the rarity is anything but.

Would you rather have a higher-grade example of one of Bradman's more common cards, or a true Pop 1 card like this?

🏏 Virat Kohli & Kane Williamson — 2019 Tap 'N' Play India vs. New Zealand Abandoned Match (/25)

Two of the defining players of their generation. One card.

This 2019 Tap 'N' Play card features India captain Virat Kohli and New Zealand captain Kane Williamson from their World Cup match at Trent Bridge, which was ultimately abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

Limited to just 25 copies, this is an especially unique card from a highly sought-after modern set. It brings together two members of cricket's modern Fab Four, who spent much of their careers defining an era of international cricket.

This example is graded PSA 8 (NM-MT) and is PSA Population 2, with none graded higher.

There's something fitting about a card commemorating a match that never happened featuring two players whose careers became so intertwined.

If you could own just one, would you choose the Kohli, Williamson, or dual card?

🏏 Kane Williamson — 2019 Tap 'N' Play World Cup Player of the Match (/25)

Limited to just 25 copies, this 2019 Tap 'N' Play Player of the Match card is one of the rarest modern cards of Kane Williamson, one of the defining players of his generation and a member of cricket's modern Fab Four alongside Virat Kohli, Joe Root, and Steve Smith.

Graded PSA 9 (Mint), this is an exceptionally scarce card from a set that produced some of the most sought-after modern cricket issues.

Williamson's legacy extends well beyond his batting. He led New Zealand to the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup Final and, two years later, captained them to victory in the 2021 ICC World Test Championship Final.

A /25 card of one of cricket's modern greats is a pretty special combination.

Which Kane Williamson card is your grail card?

🏏 Joe Root — 2019 Tap 'N' Play World Cup Player of the Match (/25)

Limited to just 25 copies, this 2019 Tap 'N' Play Player of the Match card is one of the rarest and most desirable cards of Joe Root, one of England's greatest batsmen.

This example is graded PSA 8 (NM-MT) and is a PSA Population 2, with only one copy graded higher (a PSA 9).

Issued during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, cards like this represent the modern era of cricket collecting, where scarcity has become just as important as the player featured on the card. With only 25 copies produced, they are seldom seen and remain highly sought after by collectors.

Root's remarkable career includes leading England to victory in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, captaining England in Test cricket, and becoming one of the highest run-scorers in Test history. As both a player and collector favorite, cards like this are among the premier modern issues of one of England's all-time greats.
