Environmental documentary “Out of Plain Sight,” a cinematic expansion of a series of haunting reports by environmental journalist Rosanna Xia, made its West Coast premiere on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at @officialsbiff. Several in attendance said they left the screening deeply shaken by its revelations.In 2020, after receiving a tip from UCSB’s David Valentine, @rosanna.xia broke the story that as many as half a million barrels of toxic waste — including DDT — had been quietly dumped into the ocean decades ago, just off the coast of Los Angeles.DDT’s damage persists decades after the chemical was banned. Signs warning of tainted fish still cover local piers, recent studies show our immune systems may be compromised, and women today — exposed to DDT from their mothers, who were exposed by their mothers — grapple with the still-mysterious risks of breast cancer.Xia serves as @outofplainsightfilm’s director alongside L.A. documentary filmmaker @danielstraub. They were joined at a Q&A after the screening by the film’s cinematographer, @austinstraub.“I have spent years unraveling a toxic mystery that the ocean had buried for generations, and this story was begging to be told more visually – with a more profound exploration of how the horrors of our past continue to affect us and our future,” Xia recently told The Times. “Not far from Catalina Island, aboard one of the most-advanced research ships in the world, David Valentine discovered a corroded barrel on the seafloor that gave him chills,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “Out of Plain Sight” is an independent co-production from L.A. Time has been flying and I wanted to make sure too much didn’t go by before I thanked the incredible folks @slamdancegroup for a truly unforgettable time. To be able to play @outofplainsightfilm in a venue like this, in front of a sold out crowd of folks who care about the environment, about science—it’s the kind of thing that really gives me hope right now.We also got to see some truly incredible films and meet some wonderful folks. @stolenkingdomfilm brought the house down, and I’ve been quoting bits of it since I saw it. Congrats to @joshbaileythings, @slater_grey, @oh_no_brando, and the team! @theholestorymovie was another doc highlight for me, from director Elijah Sullivan. The subjects in the film are heartfelt, curious, and at times hilarious. @inthemouth.film has brilliant writing, directing, acting, and cinematography. It also added “Lah?” to my repertoire of quotes from the fest. Brilliant work by @corysantilli, @colinburgers, @jessemuro___, @bearquinn, @mikemagilnick, and the rest of the team! DEUCE was a standout I caught on streaming after that I was so sad to have missed in person. The way the film portrayed the ways we confront gender in childhood was nuanced and deeply relatable. Just a brilliant piece from @margot.budzyna, @christiantaz, @kaj_dickson, and the rest of the team. Lacuna’s mesmerizing, haunting examination of our relationship to the environment and the ways we’ve changed it by @carlonasisse and @shirley_yumeng_he... So many more projects that blew me away during the week, but these were just a few of them!I’d also just like to thank the absolute heroes who made Slamdance what it was: Peter Baxter, @thepostcard, @annaleeawesome, @dgkoproductions, @totallysketch, @_janagallagher, @rahulbbbarkley, and the many many other Slamdance team members who kept the festival running smoothly, as well as @netflix @egyptianla for letting us borrow this iconic venue for an evening to play the film in.Lastly, to my friends who showed up or just offered words of support—THANK YOU. This film has been my life for the past few years (and still is 😅), and I’m really really grateful for you all being alongside me for it!!! by @danielstraub

People rocking up to screenings in Pencil hats. 350 of us crammed into a theater learning how to sharpen pencils from @thisisdavidrees in @pricefilms’s How To Sharpen Pencils. Pretty legendary.
