Revisiting Revol Press books # 6: C. Derick Varn & Daniel Tutt – The People Are Not One ✊🏽📚

In The People Are Not One, Daniel Tutt and C. Derick Varn dismantle the central illusion of contemporary left politics: that “the people” can serve as a coherent subject of emancipation. Against both right and left populisms, they argue that this fantasy of unity obscures real class antagonisms and traps socialism in a dead-end politics of moral appeal and electoral maneuver.

Through a sustained critique of left-populism, post-Marxist theory, and Democratic Party–oriented socialism, Tutt and Varn show how the collapse of mass politics, alongside debates over the professional-managerial class and the atomization of working-class life, has produced a strategic impasse on the left.

What follows is not a lament but a provocation: a call to abandon populist shortcuts and rebuild socialist strategy on the terrain of class struggle as it actually exists—uneven, divided, and politically unformed. The People Are Not One is a manifesto for a post-populist left willing to confront fragmentation head-on and begin the long work of reconstructing class power. by @danieltutt

Check out my new interview with Paul Prescod, an organizer and writer with Labor Notes and a contributing editor to Jacobin magazine, on his new book, Against Black Nationalism: Garvey, Randolph, and the Makings of a Black Movement. Prescod sets two of the twentieth century's most influential Black leaders side by side to ask a pointed question: why did Marcus Garvey's black nationalism collapse, while A. Philip Randolph's labor organizing went on to reshape American politics?

Save the Date & Join Us on Friday, October 30, at Busboys and Poets for an evening with French philosopher and publisher Aymeric Monville and philosopher Gabriel Rockhill, in conversation with Daniel Tutt. For decades, "French Theory," the work of thinkers like Foucault, Deleuze, and Derrida and the Nietzschean currents behind them, has shaped how much of the Western left thinks about power, politics, and emancipation. Monville and Rockhill argue that this legacy has disarmed rather than empowered the left, and they make the case for returning to a Marxist understanding of class struggle and social transformation.

Copies of Monville's The Poverty of Left Nietzscheanism and the authors' joint book, Requiem for French Theory: Transatlantic Funeral Dirge in a Marxist Key, will be for sale at the event.

Snag a spot for the DC book release party for The Blueprint. Marx may have never wrote "recipes for the cook-shops of the future" but what if socialists today need to develop a clear plan for a socialist society? Come learn what Burgis, Sunkara and Beggs propose.

A little Debsian era American socialist lore. Such a formidable group. What I wouldn’t give to attend an event with these figures. Debs the preacher, Ameringer the artist-musician and storyteller, Mills the socialist philosopher and Lowe the IWW labor lawyer. by @danieltutt

We are offering one full and one partial Scholarship for our upcoming Seminar, “The Later Lukács on Social Ontology, Irrationalism & Marxist Reason,” taught by Daniel Tutt @danieltutt and starting on October 2.

This Seminar reads major selections from Georg Lukács's later writings alongside his most significant interpreters, taking up the ontology of social being and the critique of irrationalism as attempts to break with neo-Kantian conceptions of reason in philosophy and politics. The aim is to clarify what distinguishes Marxist reason from its neo-Kantian rival, and to return to the questions of alienation, reification, and class consciousness raised in History and Class Consciousness. Those questions persist in the late work, where Lukács builds a systematic Hegelian-Marxist project to answer them. The Seminar also reads that project against neo-rationalism, speculative realism, and current arguments over humanism and transhumanism.

Session 1: The Neo-Kantian Hole: Totality and History
Session 2: Irrationalism and Marxist Reason
Session 3: Why Social Ontology? Social Class and Ethics
Session 4: The Role of Labor and Teleology: Towards a Renewed Humanism

DEADLINE: September 30 at 23:59 ET.
To apply, send a 250-word letter to studentservices@thenewcentre.org explaining your background and your need for financial relief. The New Centre Members will be given priority for the full Scholarship.

After a popular uprising against neoliberalism, an attempt to charter a new constitution, and a politically dead Gabriel Boric administration, the Pro-Pinochet right now holds power in Chile. In an interview with Gabriel Delacoste, Daniel Tutt asks what went wrong.

In this video, our Instructor Daniel Tutt @danieltutt introduces the upcoming Seminar, “The Later Lukács on Social Ontology, Irrationalism & Marxist Reason,” beginning October 2 at The New Centre.

For decades, Georg Lukács’s later work drew little attention from academic philosophers. Following the 2021 republication of The Destruction of Reason and a renewed interest in Hegelian Marxism, this Seminar reads major selections from Lukács’s later writings alongside his most significant interpreters, focusing on his theory of the ontology of social being and his critique of irrationalism as an attempt to break with the neo-Kantian conception of reason still shaping philosophy and politics today.

Across four sessions, Participants revisit the debates on alienation, reification, and class consciousness first raised in History and Class Consciousness, and examine how Lukács’s later philosophy bears on contemporary socialist practice, read alongside neo-rationalism, speculative realism, and current debates on humanism and transhumanism.

A new piece! I argue that Lukács’s distinction between first- and second-order mediations in History and Class Consciousness provides one of the strongest rebuttals to the claim that the left no longer needs a robust theory of "class transitivity."
