by @danielwchen0

As of this weekend, I’ve officially graduated from iSchool at Berkeley, where I got my master degree from! It was an extremely humbling journey. The community that’s built by EVERYONE involved really offers limitless opportunities for people to connect, reflect, and learn. It really opens up my eyes on what inter-disciplinary collaboration between a group of people gifted with innate intellectual and varying domain experiences are capable of. I’ve started to take it for granted after a while but I personally have become a strong believer of interdisciplinary learning.

No one specialization can stand alone and significantly contribute to the advancement of technology and humanity. Everyone and everything is intertwined and interconnected. Every small action and small thoughts we conduct are the foundations of our characters, and our characters are foundations of the society. Outstanding engineering without serious consideration of the socio-economic implications should be treated as a sin. Passion for driving social changes without the ability execute, implement, and critically assess the assumptions might be a time waster or commit irreversible mistakes. But the most important thing is to be open-minded at all time, especially towards the voices that scare us the most or the people who are most different than us, because it’s really through the disagreements we grow.
I’ve learned that it’s very easy to be good at one thing, but it’s extremely difficult to be good at multiple things. And in order create great things, we have to be great at multiple things, and it takes a lifetime of dedication and efforts to do that. We should never use societal standard to measure the greatness of work. There needs to be better metrics than that. We should learn to periodically revisit and re-assess our long held experiences and assumptions we made subconsciously towards people and things. Things we used to love could easily be things that you will learn to hate, and vice versa. I appreciate the exposure iSchool allows me to have on ethics, principles, and engineering rigor. These things really make technological creation more meaningful. I think such emphasis provides long-t taken in UC Berkeley School of Information by @danielwchen0
