continuing my long-term research on empathy, my new book looks at how language and words act as both perpetrators of failed systems that lack imagination and care, and as frameworks through which to create something new. words as polarisers or ‘bringers togethers’. inhumane categorisers or invitations for holding and being held, and all the miscommunication in between.

‘All The Tables Are Brown’, 90 notes on words. above are some of the hope filled ones for a new path 🧄

An extract from a text I wrote for THE DRAFT, a growing publication accompanying Drafts 1-4 of Where We Touch The Archive - a touring exhibition in response to the practice of artist, activist, academic, Tessa Boffin (1960-1993), co-curated by Polly, Jazz, Ricardo, and me.

We came up with THE DRAFT because it was clear from our first meeting that we were not attempting to be an authority on who Tessa Boffin was, and that of course we were not “discovering” her. Instead we spent days and months like giddy children, in awe of her handwritten lectures, technical notes, clippings from books, and meticulous contact sheets, finding endless entry points and stories, each sharing what has affected us. Each sharing how much has changed, and how much has not changed, and what it feels like to be queer in the artworld today. So instinctively, in addition to the three main exhibitions focusing on Boffin’s archive and Sophie Mak-Schram & Leah McLaine’s beautiful commissions in response to it, we chose to dedicate an exhibition to the behind the scenes of the project - drafts, conversations, process, questions, doubts, one of Tessa’s exes tearing up in front of The King’s Trial, a quote she kept from Alice in Wonderland, a road trip in the heatwave to guardians Sunil Gupta and Charan Singh’s studio, and everything that is more than the final image, or the final box, and the whole life that precedes and follows it.

while my head knows what my heart can’t keep up with, or my heart feels what my head can’t sit still with - everything green and everything blue is living and alive and telling me to face away and close my eyes. now everything green and everything blue stands behind me with their arms stretched out, and like giddy children on a playground they squeal “trust us!” seems it’s my turn to fall back and let go. by @danitariel
