This is probably, in my entire life, the latest I have started my summer beachgoing. (I actually went briefly two weeks ago to the public beach, but it was a blip, almost didn’t count. So sue me. )

This gave me a chance to think a bit about why I love being on a beach, and I hope/expect I will spend every summer when I am able to doing so. (As I age, that thought flits across and is promptly tossed, but I cannot deny it exists).

Listening to kids yell, parents laugh, the sound of volleyballs inaccurately punched and retrieved, girls gossiping, and the constant reassuring sound of surf burbling in and retreating in a cycle, I felt today that the beach may be the only place left where people are free and happy.

So I come back. And will keep doing so.

Cue the fireworks, fire up the grill, and get ready for what might be the most ambitious birthday cake of all time. 🎂

America turns 250 this year, which means 250 candles on the cake … so someone should probably alert the fire department.

However you’re celebrating the Fourth of July, we hope it’s filled with great food, good company, and a sky full of fireworks.

After an amazing two month stay we leave our home. Not our « second home ». Not our « other home. ». And certainly not our « vacation home. »

These last two months have cemented the love for Provence Carolyn Edwards and I have had in our visits. Now, we live here. So, from an emotional perspective, packing up and heading to Westport is truly « leaving home. »

But I could not have experienced this without the drive or leadership, the caring, the (sometimes manic) managerial attention to detail), and ultimately the determination of my wife, Carolyn.

As I have said to her thousands of times before France became a glimmer on the horizon, much less the reality it is today …
