What song do you want played at your funeral? Link in bio to let me know. 🎶

In 2007, I started Funeral Songs with a far-reaching call-out. The responses were catalogued in a jukebox installation @mop_projects and later restaged in expanded form @monamuseum in 2012, where it lives as part of the collection. 🎶

Collated song choices range from the profound to the playful, some deliberately pulling at the heartstrings while others intend for listeners to drop everything and dance. The compilation has become an archive of how people wish to be remembered, pointing to the powerful capacity of music for holding memories and eliciting emotions. I initiated Funeral Songs to remember and acknowledge the funeral song my brother Trevor Alec Mudie (1980—2001) identified just prior to his untimely death. Amid family grief at the time, his song choice was forgotten. Recalled later, the song has become the bedrock of this archive of music you can live or die to. 🎶

On the occasion of my survey show Are You There? @wollongongartgallery curated by @james__gatt the Funeral Songs project has reopened for a new generation of contributors with an exciting future iteration of the project on the cards. More on that soon. 🎶

See link in bio to let me know your song. 🎶

BLACK WATER
Lauren Brincat & Mitchell Christie

“Black Water is a contemplative, site-responsive performance unfolding through movement, fabric and ritual. Long textiles evoke fishing nets, tides and wounds, reflecting on Australia’s aquatic ecosystems and the industries surrounding them. Carried, coiled and lifted through choreographed gestures, the work transforms the site into an immersive space for reflection - inviting audiences to consider the histories, labour and environmental forces shaping the waters that sustain communities” — Lauren Brincat

Been thinking a lot lately about what an alt Australian new wave might look like. A roo wave. So when @superpositionfestival asked us to conceive a program to play the historic @mountvicflicks we began wrangling an unruly love letter: Especially for roo, I want to tell you I was feeling that wave too. Includes 50+ artworks and artefacts with line-up coming soon. Hope to see mates in the mountains Nov 28-29 🤙

ROO WAVE TV
Programmed by Soda Jerk, Mount Vic Flicks will host a cinema transmission of nonstop nuggets from the Australian Roo Wave. Art film, ozsploits and artefacts from the un-canon of Australian culture streamed on the big screen. A wilding where cinephilia leaks into gutter rap and crunchy YouTube relics go head to head with masterworks and microhistories. Small joys and art giants. Butch aesthetics and soft porn. Where TISM meets ISMs. Where theft is a politic and the poor image is pious. Where the highbrow meets the lowbrow in the ecstatic horizon of the monobrow.

The program will surf like a channel throughout the weekend and audiences are encouraged to drop in to ride the roo wave for short or longer stays. A single ticket serves as a pass for return visits all weekend. taken in Blue Mountains, Australia by @danmudcun

Ahead of the final Sydney Cinémathèque screening of 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 today, a little casting story: how Deborah Mailman ended up playing Pam Grier.

I knew Deb because she was a customer at the video store where I worked in 1999 — my accidental film school and it seems casting agency. 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 re-staged images from film history alongside answering-machine messages, and I cast her in a riff on 𝘾𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙮 (1973), Jack Hill’s blaxploitation classic starring the legendary Pam Grier.

My mum Catherine made Deb’s dress — and appeared elsewhere in 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 as Doris Day (see a pic of Mum/Doris in the previous post) 🛀

Here’s some stills from 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 followed by the 𝘾𝙤𝙛𝙛𝙮 scene we were ripping off, and some behind the scenes happy snaps including co-star @janneke.williamson ✨

Last chance to see 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 (2000) and 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 (1998) today, Saturday 15 August at 2pm, with Pedro Almodóvar’s 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙉𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 (1988) for Sydney Cinémathèque’s Gossip season at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.🎞️

Today at Sydney Cinémathèque @artgalleryofnsw —

Two of my early videos, 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙣𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘿𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙮 (1998) and 𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙨 (2000), screen before Pedro Almodóvar’s 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙉𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙙𝙤𝙬𝙣 (1988), as part of the Cinémathèque’s Gossip season.

Made from slide photographs and answering-machine messages, the works emerged from a late-90s Sydney of video stores, landlines, artist-run spaces, queer venues and an unabashed mania for cinema.

I’ll be introducing the 7.15pm session tonight.

Screenings
📞 Wed 12 Aug — 2pm
📞 Wed 12 Aug — 7.15pm, introduced by me
📞 Sat 15 Aug — 2pm

Big thanks to @rat__101 @michael.pdf for programming!

Lee Serle: Day Shapes ⚫️🔶🛢️

What if wayfinding became choreography?

In Day Shapes, choreographer Lee Serle transforms the Sydney Fish Market forecourt into a living system of movement, signal and exchange. Three dancers animate oversized inflatable maritime day shapes—the ball, diamond and cylinder—drawing on semaphore and the visual language of navigation and maritime signalling to continually assemble and reconfigure sculptural forms in motion.

Part of Seascapes (formerly Seafood Extender), a live program exploring the cultural, social and ecological dimensions of life on the water — and of the market itself.

CONFESSIONS II HAS LANDED 💜

And so I’ve spent the last few days writing about Madonna.

Or more accurately, I’ve been writing about growing up in the suburbs through the story of 𝓜.

Best start to the week. Patrick Pound emailed this morning to tell me he collects photographs that look like curators and artists, and that he’d just acquired a Miami murderer mugshot that reminded him of me “on a ((very)) bad day.”
