North Fork Part Deux

@oldmillinn is just the kind of place I love to visit. Amazing history - a working grist mill in the 1820s, then a tavern and jazz bar for the next hundred plus years, recently beautifully renovated by new owners, with the original wheel shaft now a circular bar still in tact. An incredible selection of excellent local wines, plus some great international selections, and local oysters! They also happen to own a nearby vineyard @oldsoundvineyard where they are making small batch wines, that strive to reflect the land they come from. You can taste the salty, clean and fresh air in their wines. Made by @macariwines head winemaker Byron Elmendorf with grapes managed by local grape guru Steve Mudd. The labels made by a local artist are gorgeous pieces of art, simply showcasing what’s found in the vineyard

Old Sound Vineyard Chardonnay 2022 - the color of a beautiful sunset - tangerine and apricot with marzipan and a light tannic bite

Old Sound Vineyard Rosé 2024 - soft pink color, strawberry scented and laced with minerality. A highly drinkable rosé with good depth of flavor

A few weeks ago, I finally made it out to the #northforklongisland

As someone who has worked in the wine business her whole career, I have no real explanation for why I’ve never visited, despite knowing some of the wines and the passionate people behind them for years. Like the great restaurant that is somehow too close to visit, we are lucky to have some af the best wine right outside our door - or at least a two-hour flat drive away (also train service!). It is filled with farm stands, still rural and charming. If you’ve never visited, get out there! #drinklocal #nywine

@macariwines has simply one of the most beautiful vineyards I’ve visited, with hundreds of acres under vine right on the LI Sound. The multi-generational, family-owned estate has a lovely, rustic-chic tasting room and makes a wide range of very good, interesting wines. With their excellent winemaker, Byron Elmendorf, at the helm, they are fine-tuning their portfolio. Some of my favorites:

Sauvignon Blanc Lifeforce 2025 (barrel sample) - a reminder that well-made Sauvignon Blanc can be both compelling and delicious. Jasmine and lemongrass aromatics with a layered, textured palate giving lots of depth and complexity.

Horses Red Blend 2024 - this is a pet-nat, a rare one that is sweet and savory at the same time, juicy and refreshing with elegant bubbles, and a gorgeous deep magenta color.

2022 Merlot - A reminder that Merlot can be very good - juicy with fresh acid, mulberry notes with a savory edge, long finish - elegant and complex. taken in Macari Vineyards & Winery by @danna_nyc

I recently had an opportunity to meet the people behind @eminenceroad, whose wines I’ve admired ever since I first tasted them at @brushlandeating a few years ago. What initially caught my attention was they’re made in the #catskillmountains , with fruit from the #FingerLakes and proprietors Andrew and Jennifer Scott have been at it for over two decades.

The wines are well made, nuanced and imaginative, crafted in a small barn adjacent to their home. They were kind enough to welcome me into their home for a tasting, and I could have been in a small farmhouse in the French countryside being hosted by local vignerons. Their #wines are all unfined and unfiltered, and slowly continue to ferment during the winter months in their cellar.

High quality wine is being made all over #NYstate, a reminder to get out and there and support localwines!

Eminence Road Aromella 2023 - Deep gold color, persistent bubbles, oily Gewürztraminer- like texture with apricot, rose aromatics. A lovely, aromatic sparkling wine with elegance and finesse

•Eminence Road Chardonnay Lambs’ Quarters Vineyard 2022- An old-world styled, single vineyard Chardonnay. Neutral nose with some almond notes, low alcohol with stone fruits, well integrated oak with light vanilla notes, and a long finish.

•Eminence Road Pinot Noir Lambs’ Quarters Vineyard 2023 - Strawberry notes with some earthy tones, restrained style with silky tannins and finesse.

•Eminence Road Acidalia 2023 - a Bordeaux blend with bright acid, moderately intense cranberry, violet notes on the nose and the palate, oak is deftly integrated with a persistent, long finish. The name references the name of the area where the farm is located, a reference to the acid factory that supported the tanning business.

•Eminence Road Riesling - Botrytis - 2023 - A distinctive Riesling made with about 25% botrytized grapes, textured palate with citrus flavors and minerality that run through the wine. taken in Long Eddy, New York by @danna_nyc
