🍊🍊Blessed to have been able to help pick grapefruits today in southern Israel.

This family farm grows citrus fruits and has been heavily impacted since Oct. 7.
They had Palestinian and Thai workers, many of them working with the Kahlon family for over 30 years and are like family. Most of the Thai workers left Israel, fearing the escalating war while the Palestinian workers have not been cleared to re-enter Israel from the West Bank due to security concerns.
Lior, his brothers and father who run the farm have been left with 1/4 of their manpower, like many other family owned farms in Israel. These trees should have been harvested over two months ago. Lior explained that this years yield is already mostly lost as much of the fruit is overripe. But the longer the trees stay with their fruits, the less fruits they’ll yield next year.

It wasn’t easy work. The trees are densely packed with heavy fruits and the branches have thorns. We heard the booms of the war every so often in the distance. Still everyone around was working hard because we had a shared purpose.

Seeing how much labor goes into the farming industry gave me a new appreciation for the food I buy. How lucky are we to be able to get such fresh produce at any grocery store? And we don’t have to lift a finger.

We got a tour of their packaging facility where they expressed how much they missed their workers and are awaiting their return. Many of the conveyor belts were empty while cases of ripe clementines sat around. With grocery stores’ strict guidelines, thousands of kilos of perfectly ripe fruits were doomed to be wasted. He handed out bags and let us all take as much as we wanted home 🥰

In our coffee break from picking, we mingled with the other volunteers a bit and within a few minutes of playing Jewish geography, we found some common connections. They shared memories of the early days of Israel.

It reminded me how special it is to be Jewish. How small of a community we are. And how important Israel has been to providing a safe haven after generations of suffering in the peripheries.
