Almost didn’t post this one.

Forward facing walk cycle was the study of the week. There are two versions here. The first one you’ll see was actually the last one I made, and I think it looks so much better. The second one, which was my first attempt, looks like absolute garbage… but it took me about three hours to figure out.

At one point I was in a full panic thinking, “WTF am I doing? I can’t even animate a simple walk?”

I didn’t follow any tutorials for this. I really wanted to challenge myself and build it using only the knowledge I’ve picked up so far.

When the improved version finally came together, I was so stoked. I was on cloud nine for a few hours. It genuinely felt like a win.

Sharing a character walk study from the studio today.

I want to tell new designers something people rarely say.

When you're learning, studying work that’s better than yours is one of the fastest ways to improve. It might feel like copying, but I see it as learning from the best.

For this walk study, I pulled variations from work I found after we finished “Blue Berry.” Luckily, the characters had similar body shapes and limb traits to ours.

I wanted to understand how the movements were built.

Yes, I used the same walk patterns.
But more importantly, I studied the walk cycles, the timing, weight shifts, and emotional cues.

That process taught me how to animate with intention.

How to control movement instead of guessing.

How to express different emotions using the same character framework.

In the latest session, I learned how to create clean jump loops and started working with pre comps in After Effects

Understanding how to structure animations with pre compositions was super stressful but critical I think to better workflow.

I’m really happy with the progress so far. Right now, I’m focused on expanding my overall understanding of After Effects and getting more comfortable experimenting with different techniques.

Face rigging was one of the more complex aspects of @after_efects_shop that I had learned just a few weeks ago.

Today was pretty cool! I finally built a more advanced face rig with multiple pupil variations (thanks to sliders!).

The character is pretty simple but the emotions really pop through the eyes alone. Getting the @javascript.js settings correct for each variation was definitely the toughest part.

Super happy with the results! What do you think?
