Bob (mand Suzanne’s first road trip. Suzie got muddy. Bob carried the gear, and I was just along for the ride!

It was a wild, shaggy, and excellent year. Much better than the last. Not nearly as good as the next. by @dannerman

Where the heck is Dan?

So - story time - I went downtown to the fancy new taco place last night, and they had a very delicious fried avocado taco. What they did not have was Horchata. In fact, when I asked the bartender if they had Horchata, he asked me what Horchata was. 😬 gringos.

Este tienda tiene horchata. Y flan. Y tres leches. Y birria. Gracias a Dios. by @dannerman

All right folks. The Last of Us, Season 1 comes to an end tomorrow night. As you probably don’t know I’ve been writing a blog about this adaptation of my favorite video game of all time.

NO SPOILERS ALLOWED - no comments from anyone who has played the game or knows the game ending - I want to know what people who haven’t played the game and don’t know how the game ends, think is going to happen. by @dannerman

Things I’m thankful for today -

That hot water heaters work when the power is off

That I have family who pitch in when I’m in need

That I get to pitch in when others are in need.

That Gary Holcomb and Joshua Bedford and Aaron Tennis taught me enough about electricity to re-wire my furnace to work with a generator in a mostly safe fashion.*

That I was surrounded by hardy hiking people in college and have too many wool socks and down sleeping bags to be bothered by a little cold.

That diners exist.

*please don’t hold these people liable for any of the disasters that may result from my amateur electrical work. by @dannerman

Looking back at the last year, I was tempted to write it off. If you asked me to tell you what happened, unprompted, it would be a Litany of Bad. It felt like I was swimming, and not in the happy way, but the whitewater way - helpless, bouncing off rocks, gasping for air and 50/50 getting air or a mouthful of cold malevolence. I spent much of this year not wanting to be on this earth.

But memory is what you choose, and what you rehearse. You see what you expect to see, and you remember the details that fit the story you keep telling yourself. And if you’re not careful you can paint it all dark and forget the glory.

There was a lot of hard, tough swimming this year. There was also the breathtaking wonder of the mountains and sky. Seeing flowers blooming in meadows that were forest-fire-burnt. (And some amazing breakfast burritos). I lost some good things, but I also lost some bad things. And found some better things.

You become what you rehearse, and you remember what you rehearse as well, and I didn’t have a grasp on what this year was really like until I hit the end of it, and spent a morning sitting with my loved ones and reviewing every picture I took (and every meme I saved) in 2022. And I’m glad I did. I don’t really want to write off the last two years, though there are some parts I would definitely like to talk to the Management about.

For everyone who held my hand over the last year (or two) while I was swimming, thank you. You are dearer to me than I can express.

And to all, Merry Christmas! by @dannerman
