At Manly Writer's Festival this year, I was given an hour to write a story that took as it's inspiration the phrase, "it's done, you can come home now." The piece that follows tells the horny, thrilling and slightly unhinged tale of a night out at a Jim Henson themed Muppet dance night at a gay club in Sydney. Special mention must be made here of the Eastern European Personal Trainer I describe as having a voice "meaty as a kransky sausage", "my perky little titties in a diamontee studded top" and of course, my "Uber driver's Hamoodi's" recitation of the shahada booming out the speakers of his Toyota. A very Sydney night out indeed.The premise of this task was "what makes art human?" Personally, I use AI to organise and budget, edit photos (like the cover shot of this reel) and even for first runs at writing drafts: but the insanity, trauma and comic timing of the human voice, written and spoken, is something no machine can manufacture.Special thanks to @alicefraserhuman for expertly hosting this, @adamrichard for buoying me up with his booming laughter from across the room and of course the wonderful team at @manlywritersfestival for putting this alltogether. by @danny_nour

💃🏽 Leee leee leee!It’s an honour to be shortlisted for the NSW Literary Award’s Multicultural NSW Award. 🩴✨ Sandals is flying further than I anticipated and I’m very grateful.This is my debut and I wrote it in isolation and with uncertainty. It’s so validating to receive this acknowledgement of literary merit and craftsmanship, and the chance to celebrate our community of Egyptians and Arabs, especially when we’re so often stigmatised and diminished. Making fun of the ones you love is the litmus test of devotion and I hope this work shows that I love my community a lot.What makes it sweeter is that I stand alongside greats like @randaafattah and Micaela Sahar. Three Arab-Australian writers in one category, at a time like this. Mabrouk to us all.Thank you Affirm Press,@sweatshop.ws my partner @kashifharrison and my longsuffering family.Here were the judges comments:This excellent debut is a refreshing look at growing up ethnic and queer in a conservative Egyptian Christian community. Although it grapples with questions of faith, race, representation and belonging, it does not fall into the trap of making the migrant experience traumatic. Daniel Nour has mined early childhood memories, awkward school experiences, first relationships and a trip to his motherland to show that truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction. With a cast of characters from his real and chosen families, the story is told in short ‘how-to’ pieces that draw on life lessons from his various coming-of-age experiences, making it a collection that is relatable, disarming and brimming with heart. Written with a solid narrative voice, and boldly celebrating the diversity of migrant communities, Nour’s memoir is light but contemplative, artfully capturing the intricacies of its central characters in a hilarious and unapologetic way. by @danny_nour

Three years with this man.As a closeted but fairly obvious kid, I used to wonder if I’d ever get to build a life with someone I loved.You are kind, thoughtful, patient and gentle.
