Right now, my son is on the way to the airport, to begin his journey in the US Air Force, and I can’t help but think back.

I remember pushing his little legs at nine months old, determined to make him strong… he was walking by 10.5 months. I remember teaching him to draw, his alphabet, and how to read… running alongside him while he learned to ride a bike, holding him in the water until he didn’t need my arms anymore, because he built his own strength.

I remember, signing him up for a soccer at 4 1/2… and watching it become his passion. Snowboarding. Swimming. International trips to expand his mind. Building a home so he’d always feel grounded and safe.

For his whole life, my role was clear.
Teach him, Guide him, Protect him, make him Strong.

And now… my role changes.

Now I have to trust that everything we built… gave him the tools to succeed on his own. I have to trust him, to protect himself. That’s not easy. But it’s right.

I’m proud of him in a way that goes deeper than words. There’s even a quiet awe in watching him choose a path of service, structure, and growth. This is something I once thought about for myself, but life took me elsewhere. Seeing him step into it with strength feels powerful.

He’s not a little boy anymore. He’s a man choosing his own road.

And I’ll always be here… not to shield him from the world, but to stand behind him as he steps into it.

Your strength was quiet but unshakable.
Your love, fierce and endless.
Even without you here, I often feel your hands shaping the man I’ve become.

One of your greatest gifts was how you showed love through what you cooked… the way a meal could comfort, celebrate, or bring people together without a single word spoken. I’ve learned to love people the way you loved us, by cooking for them, by feeding their hearts as much as their hunger. I hope I did you proud.

Happy birthday, Mom. Your spirit still lives in my kitchen, in the simplest of dishes I make (chicken cutlet + mashed potatoes) and in every moment food becomes love.

The joy of my son’s birth lives alongside my mom’s birthday and the day she left us.

It’s a reminder of how life can hold both celebration and grief at once.

people who are close to me, or know me, understand that I don’t enjoy celebrating my birthday, or getting old.
