It’s the final day to see my show “Pentimento” at @wexlergallery . The response has been amazing and I feel so grateful to everyone for coming out, reaching out and showing all the love and support! It means the world to me ❤️ “Equally informed by surfaces shaped by time, erosion, and historied patina, Balgley’s compositions develop through a dual methodology of application and excavation. Dense layers of paint are applied, obscured, scraped away, and exhumed, transforming each canvas into a visual record of layered gestures where earlier decisions remain visible, informing the work’s final state. Through this process of trace archaeology, the painting becomes both image and artifact, preserving evidence of its own evolution.” by @dannybalgley
A closer look at Danny Balgley’s practice and the ideas behind Pentimento, his debut solo exhibition at Wexler Gallery. Rooted in an intuitive, process-driven approach to painting, Danny’s work builds through layers, revisions, and traces of what came before. In Pentimento, those accumulated histories become part of the work itself—shifting between surface, memory, and discovery. Watch the full studio visit and exhibition walkthrough now on Vimeo and YouTube. Pentimento is on view at Wexler Gallery, Philadelphia, through October 2, 2026. 🎥 by @schiarizzi by @dannybalgley
Getting ready for my upcoming show in Philly with some new paintings. These pieces merge the structured, formal aspects of my past work with a more recent exploration of gestural, impastoed paint. More to come… “Anvil” 2026 48 x 60 inches acrylic and oil on canvas by @dannybalgley
The abstract paintings in Pentimento, the debut solo exhibition at Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia by New York artist Danny Balgley, live up to their title. Like geological strata, the urban palimpsest of peeling billboards and weathered facades, or memory itself, their layers let traces of earlier marks show through, revealing themselves gradually, the longer we look. “Hold Fast” was the first drawing I finished for Pentimento at @wexlergallery. It really set the tone and became the touchstone for everything else in that drawing series that followed. Hold Fast, 2026 Gouache on paper 11 x 14 inches (framed to 18 x 22) by @dannybalgley
Still beaming from the reception for my show last weekend at @wexlergallery 💗 Big thanks to @daldaldunn and the Wexler team for putting so much into making this show happen, and to everyone who came out. Having so many friends, family, and people who traveled all the way to Philly in one room, I am still taking it all in. The flowers, the texts, the people who made long trips just to be there, it really meant the world. Oh, and if you snapped any photos, please send them my way or drop them in my DMs! Still trying to collect all the shots from the night. by @dannybalgley

I loved talking with Danny Balgley @dannybalgley on the show in our new episide "Abstract Painting and Archaeology of Mark-making with Danny Balbley". In this episode, we discuss his background, multi-layered studio practice, and his solo show 'Pentimento' at Wexler Gallery. Danny Balgley is a painter whose large-scale abstract works investigate the archaeology of mark-making, using a process of physical accumulation and excavation to explore how surfaces hold, reveal, and dissolve history.
