Albert Cashier’s identity is still debated by some historians, and you’ll sometimes see him referred to by the name he was given at birth.

But consider what we actually know.

Albert chose the name Albert Cashier. He lived as a man for more than 50 years. He continued living as a man long after his military service ended, when there was no longer an obvious practical reason to do so. And when he was eventually forced to wear women’s clothing, accounts describe him as deeply unhappy with it.

We obviously can’t ask Albert what language he would use for himself today. But to me, dismissing the possibility that he was trans because our modern terminology didn’t exist yet misses something pretty significant about the life he actually chose to live.

What do you think? How should we talk about historical figures whose identities predate the language we use today?

Lucy Hicks Anderson knew who she was. She refused to let the courts define her.

”I defy any doctor in the world to prove that I am not a woman.”

Her story is a reminder that trans people have always existed, and that history is full of people who refused to disappear.

Have you heard of Lucy Hicks Anderson before? What other LGBTQ+ historical figures do you think deserve more recognition?

Born in Houston in 1916, Broadnax became known for his powerful tenor and performed with some of the most influential Black gospel quartets of the 20th century, including the Golden Echoes, the Spirit of Memphis Quartet, the Fairfield Four, and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi. In the 1960s, he even fronted his own group, Little Axe and the Golden Voices.

When Broadnax died in a tragic domestic altrecation in 1992, news of his trans identity shocked much of the gospel world; however, he is now primarily remembered as both a pioneering figure in trans history and a respected voice of Black gospel music.

What other LGBTQ+ historical figures do you think deserve more recognition?

Some museums have officially reclassified Roman emperor Elagabalus as a trans woman, updating exhibit labels to use she/her pronouns based on ancient historical texts.

@northhertsmuseum says the change reflects writings from Roman historian Cassius Dio, who claimed the emperor once said: “Call me not Lord, for I am a Lady.”

The decision has sparked debate among historians. Some scholars argue the surviving texts were politically motivated attacks written by hostile contemporaries, while others believe they provide meaningful evidence of gender identity and expression in the ancient world.
