POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
*sappy post alert* In my feels quite a bit due to a lot of things (end of year reflecting, nice messages I got about a news segment I was on, a hangover from the best men’s world cup final ever, and more). This is not a new story for many, in part because I posted something on twitter and (flips hair) kinda went viral and Megan Rapinoe responded. But after this, I’ll likely lay this topic to rest.

This tattoo is a sketch of Abby Wambach’s big goal against Brazil in the 2011 World Cup. It is, as I have said to many people, my favorite game of soccer I’ve ever watched. I loved it so much that it inspired me to start playing again as an adult, even though I hadn’t played since I was 10(?). I was also very depressed at the time and feeling very down about myself and felt lost in some very scary ways. Had trouble getting out of bed, couldn’t socialize, you get the jist. That game was the first thing I was truly excited about.

In the last month and some change, I was elected president of @nyramblers and was on NBC News talking about homosexuality in soccer (things that would have felt impossible to my 23 year old self) and it feels like a good time to reflect on all that this adventure has given me. In an 11 year period that has had nothing but change for me, this has been the one constant. Soccer’s taught me how to depend on other people, and how to let other people depend on me. It’s taught me how to push myself and not get too upset when I fall short of my goal. It’s helped me realize that I can trust myself more than I thought and given me so many friends.

I’ve had so many bad days and so many good days and so many days where I don’t even notice my mood, which might be my favorite kind of day. Sometimes I wish I could go back in time and talk to my 2011 self–not sure whether I’d smack him upside the head or tell him it gets better. But I’m proud of him, and I hope he’s proud of me.

To anyone who’s been part of this journey for me–whether that’s being a teammate or that I am difficult to plan with because I play in too many leagues–thank you.

Happy new year, friends. by @dannygilbs

Another trip around the sun—had some rocky moments but also some great moments. A huge thanks to everyone who I leaned on, whether they knew it or not (none pictured here) 🎂 ☀️ by @dannygilbs

One second from every day in 2025, a year that I’m not really entirely sure how I would summarize. Looking forward to a new one (and not just for Survivor 50). by @dannygilbs

I’ll do something I rarely do and cut to the chase: I’m stepping down as @nyramblers president (not going anywhere though! Still playing). And now I’ll do something more typical and overshare my feelings on the topic.

In the last five years, this has been a big part of my life. Though this is best for me and the club, it’s complicated. Complicated to say goodbye to something that was both the source of tremendous pride and equal stress. Something that allowed me to take myself more seriously while quietly wondering if I was the butt of the joke. Something that connected me with incredible people but also may have cost me a cherished friendship or two.

When I first joined the board, I felt a lot of pressure, like there was so much I had to uphold and maintain. Some of that was valid. There is a lot of work that’s required. But thinking deeper, it feels foolish. Communities like this rely on everyone, and I wish that five years ago, I had known that as intimately as I do now. My honest perspective is that anything good I did was because of the people that I was surrounded by, all 300+ members that make up this club.

Truth is, I didn’t feel cut out for this role and spent most of my time second-guessing myself. That part never really changed. But I tried my best and learned a lot in the process about myself and things so much bigger than me.

I did things I’m proud of and made mistakes. Hopefully people appreciate the former and forgive the latter, but I also understand if that’s not the case for some.

I’ll wrap up with a quick anecdote: At my first annual party in 2017, I arrived 30 minutes late—not because I was held up, but because I circled the block in the cold, too nervous to enter. When I finally walked in, a teammate hugged me, pointed to his table, and told me to just make room if there wasn’t a free seat. More than anything, I hope the club is still like that for people.

Thank you to so many people who helped and supported me in this adventure. And as always: if you have any questions email president@nyramblers.com and Harry will be sure to get right back to you. by @dannygilbs
