What an unforgettable Community Screening of Haboolm Ksinaałgat ā€˜SOUL CATCHER’ at SFU Woodward’s this past Sunday with so many extraordinary people.

I’m so incrediably proud of Amanda Strong and Pamala Post and the entire Spotted Fawn team on this important film. What a huge accomplishment!

We learned that the film won the Grand Jury Award For Best Short Film in the Animation sector at the Edmonton International Film Festival.

It was so incredibly exciting to share the stage with the crew that were able to come out to the Vancouver community screening celebrating this amazing accomplishment and artistic feat. A powerful nod to reconciliation and uplifting Indigenous stories.

I didn’t get as much photos as I would like too, but our experience together that day is forever engraved in our memories. What an absolute perfect day! ā˜ŗļø

From a very early age, whether or not I knew, all I wanted to do was create and make art.Ā

Some of the earliest memories were sitting at the dining room table and drawing what I was obsessed with like industrial machines, vehicles and other gadgets. If it wasn’t drawing or painting, I would spend hours designing and building elaborate meccano or lego sets, models and tree forts. Which eventually also led to more intricate hobbies in my teen years such as model railroading and working with miniatures.

Who knew, those curiosities and interests eventually became my profession. Railroading and miniatures set me up for working in stop motion. Fascination in building and designing has translated to me working in set construction, prop making and decorating both for stop motion and live events.Ā

What has changed from my younger years to now is the hecticness of a creative life. Typically I will be found working in the art department, shooting photos or video for live events or headshots for artists. At home, I’m usually working within my roughly 6’ by 6’ studio space where I build, edit, write, draft, research, rehearse, study, plan, paint, glue, sew, sketch, repair and yes, cry… happy tears.Ā Ā

The journey continues. Sink or swim. A creative life can feel hard to be in, and can feel restrictive or misunderstood by others,Ā but I also hold onto the joy of it all, not to mention the privilege of collaborating with some of the most talented artists right now in all my fields of work.

Sometimes I have to remind myself how good I have it. Knowing that I’ve been able to lead a pretty modest, but rewarding life working in the arts for almost 20 years. Again, I couldn’t ask for anything more.. and no, this post doesn’t mean I’m not dying, well aren’t we all slowly dying?

I wouldn’t trade all the hardships and challenges for anything else in the world when it comes to working in the arts. What do they say? Find something you love and let it kill you.Ā Okay, I’m done. šŸ˜‹

Maturing and aging like fine wine… After spending a good part of 5+ years living in Montreal before moving out West, it was time to revisit one of my favourite cities for this milestone. Like they say, you only turn 40 once! 🫠

Gosh, it’s been a minute since I’ve done some puppetry on camera. Here’s a fun little one for Djo with their song ā€œEnd of Beginningā€. This video is so unhinged as I’m a chaotic rat. So much fun! šŸ€

Dig the puppet? Go check out @ddhagerud or www.colorsoundlab.com For all your puppet needs!

Every detail matters in stop motion! As someone who primarily works in the art department, it can be easy to get lost in the fast paced, multitasking aspect of the work. Yet, it’s the process of making something like this, step by step, and seeing it be part of the shot makes what I do worthwhile. ā˜ŗļø

This prop snowmobile was created for the animated film ā€˜INKWO for When The Starving Return’ was my favourite, amongst other little gems.

The long wait is over! ā€˜Inkwo for When The Starving Return’ has officially been released online with the Nation Film Board of Canada. šŸŽ„šŸ

I cannot express how grateful I am to have been invited to worked on this stop motion with such a wonderful team, and powerhouse of a director, Amanda Strong. I am wowed beyond belief the kind of magic that happens with the right people in a creative process. I had the privilege to have fabricated props, construct and dress sets, be part of camera department and much more!

You can watch this gem of a film on the NFB site. https://www.nfb.ca/film/inkwo-for-when-the-starving-return/

A very surreal moment that today marks 10 years that I arrived in beautiful BC on what then was a clean slate. šŸŒ„

At the time, I was living in Montreal for some years, but I needed a fresh start, a challenge, a city that would inspire me.

I still remember booking a one-way ticket, loading up my small backpack, iMac, and skateboard. I had a few contacts in BC, but it was all so unknown to me.

Jumping ahead, much has changed for the better, and I don’t regret taking that bold leap coming to Vancouver. Here is where I’ve really come into myself, where I’ve grown my craft as an artist, and oh-where I met my partner in crime.

There’s been many learning curves, trial and error, and goals still to pursue, but I’m excited for what the future has in store here! 😊

The ā€˜Shifting Forms’ Symposium at Emily Carr University, organized by Spotted Fawn Productions and Basically Good Media Lab. One of many highlights from this event. 🄰

Lights! Camera! Puppet! Held by the incredibly talented Dennis Jackson with his Stop Motion workshop and Dusty Hagerud’s Puppet workshop!

Obviously I was excited to have a roll in this one! Thank you Dusty for letting me put on a demo for everyone who attended. May have got a little mouthy but what can I say! šŸ˜…

Another zinger of a project and not the first! Spirt Bear and friends created right here in Vancouver, BC at Spotted Fawn Productions.

Spirit Bear: Echos of the Past in late 2023 is the fourth project created by Cindy Blackstock of First Nation Caring Society. The Spirit Bear series are educational videos to teach young kids about truth and reconciliation and creating awareness.

The oldest ā€˜employee’ to date, I had the privilege of being the on-set dresser, a fabricator, set builder and working closely with the swing gang!

Here are some behind the scenes of this adorable lil’ bears journey on set. The last clip is a sample of completed animation from the series of Spirt Bear. Enjoy! 🐻✨
