Check out the reharm I dreamed up on “Pure Imagination” from @christianwiggs on his newley (see what I did there) released album!

@bbjazziii’s flugel solo brings us into the new key center and Christian wanted the arrangement to take liberties with the exact notes of the melody. The goal was to inspire something that feels familiar yet novel.

🎭 Oscar Meets Tony: Act 1 by @christianwiggs is out now!

A lover of a good story, Christian has assembled and sang his heart out on a collection of fantastic songs from Oscar-winning films and Tony-winning musicals.

As a co-producer, arranger, conductor, & trumpeter, I can’t say I’ve been more involved with a project that wasn’t my own as a leader, and I’m thankful to Christian for bringing me on the team.

What a joy working with an incredible band (I mean, how did these schedules align?!) including @bbjazziii, @roxycoss, @stevenfeifke, @heyemmet, @mikebonomusic, @captainbessiesuave, @bryancartermusic, string orchestra led by @fiddleflip, and recorded and mixed by the one and only @kilgorestudios, with many great days at @powerstationatberkleenyc. Shoutout to @stevenfeifke & @thomascwenglinski for the incredible charts!

This set with @lucyyeghiazaryanmusic and my big band was full of surprises!

I’m also excited to feature Lucy for 2 nights this Friday and Saturday in Rochester for @slowdancesoiree. We’ll be doing 6 whole sets of slow tunes! I love challenges like this to come up with dynamic and interesting sets within extreme parameters.

Royal Albert Hall!

Still bubbling from an incredible night hearing my arrangements performed in London by @jeffgoldblum and the @heritageorchestra. This was a very special one, and more than anything I’m proud of the incredible work from a team of my closest collaborators and longtime friends. This evening of massive proportions was the brainchild of producer @christianwiggs, with masterful conducting from @bryancartermusic, the swinging core Mildred Snitzer Orchestra, the Heritage Orchestra, and some wonderful surprise guests.

@alexanderfrankmusic and I have been friends since high school, and his music direction and bass playing were phenomenal, and his and @spencerdaymusic’s original tune “Hosting in London Tonight” was an absolute blast to arrange because of its clever lyrics.

It was so meaningful to hear “No Time to Die”, which @mssirintip and I arranged to feature the marvelous @khailahjohnson. I only just learned that after the debut, Khailah had a cue from the vocal part, measure number and all, tattooed on her arm. I don’t think there’s a greater compliment an arranger could receive.

It was also a joy to hear my full orchestral version of “If I Only Had a Brain” for a wonderful Oz-inspired vocal duet between Jeff and Khailah.

The first set closed with my arrangement of Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing”, and once again Khailah and the orchestra absolutely knocked it out of the park. I also had the chance to arrange the Entr’acte, taking inspiration from original themes by Alex and Bryan.

Last but certainly not least, I was completely charmed by @doddleoddle and her performance of “Mean to Me”, on an arrangement @ryanshawdrums and orchestrated together.

Grateful to all the incredible humans involved. Thanks to @josie_bearden J&J Music Prep, and shoutout to the other arrangers whose works shined @jordanseigelmusic, @bryancartermusic, @grahamdechter, @braddechtermusic, & @kylegordonmusic. It truly takes a village to bring a night like this to life. While many people attend the battle of the big bands for the high-energy dancing, watching @AlexaBarchini step up to the microphone on the Intrepid hangar deck to sing with the @DannyJonokuchi Big Band is a reminder of the incredible musical artistry that drives this event.

As a deeply talented vocalist and lyricist, Alexa understands exactly how to weave her sound through a massive wall of brass. Fronting a full big band requires immense presence, but seamlessly blending her rich, soulful phrasing with Danny's powerful arrangements made the complex performance look effortless.

The depth of talent sharing the stage was undeniable, and having a guest vocalist who could elevate the energy of the room mid-set is what made this celebration so dynamic and captivating. Were you there for it??

Thursday night, the Louis Armstrong House Museum Big Band plays Lincoln Center’s Summer for the City!

@horneswag directs the orchestra, featuring special guests @bruceontrumpet, @wycliffegordonofficial, @imanirousselle, @dewittflemingjr, and the @bigapplelindyhoppers

Laura Jeffers will teach the dance lesson, and DJ @heatherflock will keep the dance floor swinging all night long.

This project has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me restoring charts from the Louis Armstrong House Museum archives, preserving and bringing this music back to life. Hearing this incredible orchestra perform these arrangements and some of my own for dancers and jazz lovers in NYC is the best.
