This nugget turns 15 today and though when one says you love someone so hard it hurts, you kinda go okay okay, I kinda know what that means. Gracie is brilliant, creative, hard-headed, generous, funny, stubborn and entirely, truly unique. Boy it has been fun to watch you grow up and even more fun to be a tiny part of it. ORANGE CRUSH - @fourplaysand - May 18, 2026

This play means a great deal to me. It was commissioned by the late Todd Haimes and the incredible @jillrafson at Roundabout. While they didn’t end up doing this (or any play on the subject they commissioned) they were incredibly loving and supportive of its creation.

Now that we’re where we are - in the arc of history, I wanted to re-examine the play, see if it makes sense to pull it out of the drawer and hear it again. And thanks to @fourplaysand, we know the answer to that question. It is - it is even more so. Examining our ethics, our complicity, and our atonement through the story of one man who is doing a lot of that, is exactly what we ought to be doing right now.

Thanks to Richard Schiff, Judy Kuhn, Hope Davis, Sue Jean Kim, Isaac Gancher Stinson, Arya Shahi and Avery Fahey for spending the day with us and lending us your talents.

Happy 9th birthday to Ezra Glen. I cannot say enough about this kid as he really comes into his own. He is funny and sassy, smart and interested, kind and thoughtful, and more loving than I can express. Happy 100th Birthday to the legendary Jiro Ono, whom I had the honor of dining with on August 13, 2013 when he was a mere 88 years old.

I was determined to dine with at Jiro but the reservation was impossible. Even more so now. My producers called, other producers called on my behalf, my interpreter called, if they could get through, nothing was available, or at least to me. I was not going to give up. So I wrote him a letter, about the similarities between dining and Theater, the constant striving for perfection will never ever achieving it, the ephemeral nature of our art, and how much his film meant to me. My amazing interpreter, @blanketsunday, was kind enough to translate my note and hand write it on stationary. I then put it together with an article that had been written about me in a magazine and a brochure for the play we were working on. We included Chinatsu, my interpreter, and now friend’s, number. I went to Jiro on my day off, and gently open the door shortly before lunchtime. He was behind the counter, preparing for the day, and someone came to the door. I had prepared what to say, and handed them the envelope. The man brought the envelope back to Jiro, who read every word, said something to the man who then came back to me. In English, he said, “He will call.” And I thanked him and left.

I then went about the business of my day off, which was to take the train out to the suburbs to find the then mysterious original tiny @ramenjunkie shop. As I was approaching the shop, my phone rang. It was Chinatsu. I had a reservation.

We rearranged the rehearsal schedule for the day of my visit. I practiced what to say, what to do, how to act, what would be respectful. When I sat down, the restaurant was not full. I ordered sake. As I poured some into my tiny cup, my hand was shaking with nervousness, spilling the liquid. He was standing right in front of me.

This truly amazing child turns 14 today. Gracie is so incredibly smart, kind, creative, brave, empathetic and truly silly, I couldn’t be more in aw of who they’re becoming. Also you got really into “You’re Nothing Without Me” on the Broadway channel the other day and especially the remarkable Zippel wordplay and you wrote the title on you Mr hand in sharpie so you could it to your playlist, so… We are the luckiest. Happy birthday, kiddo. by @dannymg

This weekend I was thrilled to attend the performance of Joan at The Cape Playhouse, which runs through September 20th to discuss how the play has evolved in a post show discussion.

Since before Covid I’ve been working on this with my writing partner Larry and then Danny Goldstein brought it to life with @tyeblue1 directing this cast.

9 years. Would have been 50 in a few weeks. Turning 50 has fucked with me in many ways but none more than that Michael isn’t doing it with me. Miss him every minute.

My Michael Friedman rule is that if a young calls/emails/DMs and asks for time and advice I always say yes. It was terribly important to him. Give the youngs some love today and everyday. It’s the MF rule. by @dannymg
