When I was a kid getting into the skate scene, it was easy to be enraptured with the indelible graphics from Powell Peralta, Santa Cruz & Vision Street Wear. Then I realized there was a plethora of local shops who were also putting out their own unique gear adorned with unforgettable characters. & at the very pinnacle of that list was 17th Street Surf Shop & their iconic "Nose Picker."

I finally convinced my mom to make the trip to the southside so I could get one of these shirts. & of course, when she took one look, she was aghast by the cartoon motley crew that were making out, flaunting their long hair & of course, led by a diminutive paragon of 80’s counter culture that was picking his nose.

Growing up with an older sibling, I was always trying to latch on with the bigger kids. & for the most part, they let me tag along. So when I looked at the gang on the back of those 17th Street shirts, it resembled a photograph of our crew, & of course, I imagined myself to be the Nose Picker.

I talked about him. I laughed about him. I cut my teeth drawing him. He represented a level of rebellion that pushed a gamut that I was trying to push. It’s funny now looking back how much an illustrated figure can shape a childhood, but that is exactly what happened.

I’ve always loved retro clothing that spark nostalgia. A few years back, our family stopped at 17th Street while in OBX, & they had re-released a handful of the classic designs I had grown up with. So of course, I bought one in every style & color.

Fast forward to this past Fall & I had seen posts about the Boardwalk Art Show & how they invited a guy named Danny O to be the featured artist. When I finally delved a little deeper into who he was, I realized this was the creator of the classic 17th St shirts! Reading his story about going from Navy shipman to VB local celebrity, to having it ripped away just to earn it all back, was heart breaking, mind blowing & ultra inspiring.

The next day I was at his motel embarking on an epic journey that I still pinch myself about. I hope you enjoy the video segment that came from that. It’s something I’m immensely proud of & will cherish for a lifetime. #Curate #Danny0 by @dannyostudio
