Somehow, we’re already talking about the final concerts of 2026, which feels a little wild to say! 🎹

I still have a few performances ahead, and I’d love to close out the year doing what I love most: sharing music with all of you.

Take a look at my upcoming dates, and join me if you can. It would be wonderful to see some familiar faces, and meet a few new ones, before the year is through! 🤍 by @danperforms

What do Elizabeth Taylor, ancient Egyptian astronomy and the goddess of music have in common?

This is the extraordinary Temple of Hathor at Dendera, one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.

Hathor was the goddess of music, dance, love and joy. Her worshippers celebrated with singing, dancing, harps, flutes and the sistrum, a sacred rattle whose shimmering sound was believed to delight the goddess.

Look up and you’ll find one of the most spectacular ceilings in ancient Egypt. Recently restored after centuries of accumulated soot and grime, its brilliant blues reveal an entire universe of gods, stars, zodiac signs and celestial cycles. The Egyptians developed a 365-day calendar with three seasons and five additional days associated with the births of five major gods.

And then there’s Cleopatra. The famous queen appears on the temple’s exterior walls alongside her son Caesarion, making offerings to the gods. Of course, Cleopatra was immortalized by Elizabeth Taylor in the lavish 1963 Hollywood epic!

Nearly 2,000 years later, the colours are astonishing. And as a musician, I rather like the idea of an entire temple dedicated to a goddess who considered music essential to life.

Travelling lately has been incredible, but also a bit of a busy whirlwind, and I found myself craving a quiet moment at the piano today.

Here’s a little improv in the meantime. Back in the studio and back to our regularly scheduled content soon friends. 🎹 by @danperforms

Well, this stopped me in my tracks. Sunset at the Old Cataract in Aswan, watching feluccas drift past as the desert turns gold. Agatha Christie stayed here and wrote Death on the Nile! Add a little Nino Rota from the 1978 film and I could sit here for hours. 🇪🇬

Part of Daniel Vnukowski’s musical journey through Egypt with Clarkson Travel.

Now THAT’S a jumpscare! 😱

Happy Halloween everyone! Wishing you a safe and fun night.

As for my plans? I’ll be haunted by the mug someone left on the piano. 🫣🎹 by @danperforms

Deeply saddened by the passing of Stephen Kovacevich, one of the great pianists of our time, and someone whose friendship and musical wisdom I will always treasure.

This photograph takes me back to Vienna in 2019, following a magnificent Beethoven performance at the Musikverein. Stephen had begun the evening with Bach’s entire Fourth Partita, almost as though it were a warm-up!

What always struck me about his playing was his extraordinary command of musical time. His phrasing had a natural, almost conversational quality, yet nothing was arbitrary. Every hesitation, every shift of colour, every subtle adjustment of tempo seemed to emerge from the harmonic structure itself. He could sustain an immense musical argument without ever losing the intimacy of a single phrase. His Beethoven was never merely beautiful or polished. It was searching, unpredictable, sometimes fiercely uncompromising, but always profoundly human.

And his sense of pacing! He understood that great music needs room to breathe, but also that tension must never be allowed to evaporate. There was an extraordinary balance between freedom and discipline, between architectural clarity and spontaneous discovery.

I also remember the masterclass he gave, sharing profound insights with the young pianists fortunate enough to work with him. He challenged them to think beyond the notes, to understand the musical argument and find something genuinely personal to say.

Stephen belonged to that rare generation of musicians for whom interpretation was a lifelong intellectual and emotional adventure, never a finished product.

Thank you, Stephen, for the friendship, the conversations and, above all, the music. Rest in peace.

Nobody told me that being a brilliant pianist and building a sustainable musical career require completely different abilities.

When I was younger, I imagined a life in music would grow naturally from the hours I gave to it.

Learn the repertoire. Refine the sound. Keep practicing. Somewhere, a door would open.

I didn’t think much about what it would take to keep that door open.

How to build a programme that gives an audience a reason to come.

How to speak about music with the same care I brought to playing it.

How to nurture relationships, negotiate a fee, make a budget, and plan beyond the next performance.

These things rarely appeared in my picture of an artist’s life. Yet they would shape how much room that life could hold for music.

There is creativity in bringing a concert into the world. There is care in the correspondence, courage in the proposal, and self-respect in learning what your work needs to earn.

I wish I had understood earlier that I could take these things seriously and still be wholly devoted to the piano.

That learning the business of music could help protect something deeply personal: the time to practice, the freedom to choose, and the possibility of returning to the instrument tomorrow. by @danperforms

Today we celebrate Franz Liszt! 🎹

Happy birthday to the legendary pianist and composer whose music still challenges and inspires us.

Here’s a little messing around at the piano to mark the occasion, because what better way to celebrate than to play? by @danperforms

Great catching up with Ian Derrer, the COC’s new General Director, following a thrilling evening of Mozart’s Così fan tutte at the Canadian Opera Company! Exciting times ahead for opera in Toronto!

It’s Tuesday, but it feels like it should be Friday already. Anyone else? 😅

In the middle of an already busy week, I wanted to take a little breather at the piano and share something unplanned with you. A little playing, a little experimenting, and a moment to slow down. 🎹 by @danperforms

As a beginner pianist, I wish someone had told me that tempo is something you grow into. 🎹

It’s easy to hear a beautiful performance and want to arrive at that speed immediately, before your hands have found their way or your ears have understood where each phrase is going.

But there is so much to discover slowly. Where the melody needs to breathe. How one movement prepares the next. Where tension gathers, and where it can soften.

As those details become familiar, the music begins to move more freely. Your hands find ease, the phrases find direction, and a tempo that once felt out of reach starts to feel natural.

Give yourself time to understand the music. Sometimes, slowing down is how you discover what carries it forward. by @danperforms

Throwing it back this Thursday to a performance in Nova Scotia all the way back in 2019. Can you believe that was seven years ago?! 😳

Leaving this little snippet here for you to enjoy. 🎹✨ by @danperforms
