Here’s a few tips from an average swimmer.

I’ve had a few people asking what I did to help improve my swimming, there is so much information on the gram, but here’s the best 3 tips I could give anyone wanting to improve their swim for triathlon training.

1️⃣ Learn to float! - This sounds super basic, but often overlooked. The amount of energy expenditure wasted on attempting to move without floating. You might as well be swimming with a weight on your back. Keep your chin tucked in, and your bellybutton to the surface. This can be done in the form of a pool buoy, hand paddles or fins. Get the minutes in the pool learning how to move in a floating position and it’ll make you move faster.

2️⃣ Glide ! - Don’t think at chopping at the water. We need to maintain a large surface area on top of the water, the longer we can create ourselves, the further we can disperse our body, promoting floatation.

3️⃣ Swim more! - Unfortunately, there are no secrets to getting good within a few weeks, you need to spend more time practicing the skill and physiological adaptations associated with swimming. 3 pool sessions is a great way to improve this:
1 x Skill session - pick 2 skills to work
  1 x Short interval- Mod/hard intensity
  1 x Long Swim - Low intensity

I hope these tips help you as much as they did me. Disclosure, I am no pro…

Another triathlon in the books ✔️

Tough race with tough conditions, but super happy with how well prep went leading up to the event, especially the swim and bike. Couldn’t have asked for much more on the run, but was definitely a character building experience. Took a little flight over the handlebars going through a roundabout too quick, which cost a bit of time…
Note to self, you’re not an F1 driver.. you’re an average cyclist 😂

Back to the drawing board, onto the next race ✔️

Another weekend filled with Family, Friends and Fitness.

Felt nice putting away the goggles for the weekend and bringing out the old 98 training shoes for the weekend. Makes me wonder whether there may still be a little kick left in this old buck 😂

Had so much fun at the @98gamesofficial and big thank you to all the judges and supporters for making it such a great event. Coming out with a podium finish in the Mixed Elites ain’t so bad for a bunch of Full-Time parents.

Now to rest and recover this week, before we hit Noosa in 2 weeks! Let’s av it! by @danpotter___

Let the Gains Remain!

Ft. Shoe of choice, the new @niketraining Nike Hybrid RN shoe which helps me combine running with lifting in comfort. The shoe to rule them all..

Just because your sport of choice is requiring more aerobic conditioning, doesn’t mean you need to lose your strength/size!

3 weeks out from Noosa Tri, overall volume has changed slightly but my strength days are still consistent. Personally, I’m hitting 3 WHOLE body sessions per week as a way to control muscle strain each session (reduce DOMS/muscular segmental fatigue) to reduce the carryover to my key tri sessions.

The goal at the moment isn’t to get large, it’s to achieve the MED (Minimum effective dose) to maintain my strength levels and still prevent injury from a sport that takes a lot of beating (especially on the lower body)

Pull back the volume, stay consistent with your strength sessions and maintain the calories needed to perform at your best, and you’ll maintain the size!

94kg of pure athleticism (and cookies & milk) baby!!

All I know is, there always seems to be XL tri suits left in stock… 😂

Probably the most common question I get asked when I tell people what I’m training for.

I’m definitely not built to be a triathlete by any means, but I don’t think your body type should define your goals and desires. But I do know that no matter what people think, I’m usually pretty good at proving them otherwise.

First Nike Huddle in the books ✔️

Great meeting new people and learning about some of the new performance gear coming our way! @niketraining is really raising the bar when it comes to the Hybrid style of training, and I can’t wait to share some of the new training shoes… game changer.

Still buzzing from the atmosphere! Keen as for the next one.

4 weeks until Noosa

Training is starting to heat up! This was an average week of total time accumulated training for my next Olympic race. I get a few questions around how I fit everything in, and to be honest I probably don’t do as much training as you may think.

For me personally, I’ll max out close to 9 hours of training per week close to this event. Not because I have too much on my plate, but personally I don’t need to do too much more for where I want to be leading into this race.

I will occasionally add in another strength session if time permits, but for now, this sits well for me. However, this will be different training for a longer event such as a 70.3/Ironman event.

Everything’s feel good! So must be doing something right…
