We pay tribute to 60 years of A Charlie Brown Christmas on Tuesday, Dec 16 at @redpavilionbk performing the iconic music of Vince Guaraldi, with @dansteinbass on bass and @zachjazzdrums on drums. Amazingly, Linus and Lucy was written a full 2 years before it became the iconic Peanuts theme that we all know today, having originally been written in 1963 for a documentary that Lee Mendelson was making about Charles Schulz and the Peanuts comic strip, before being reworked and becoming the signature song of Charlie Brown in 1965.

Rest in peace to the great Ray Drummond. Gone far too soon! I had the privilege of studying with Mr. Drummond for my first year at Juilliard, he was an extremely generous teacher who prioritized all the right things—MELODY, feel, sound, not to mention the kindness he showed me as a person. He was famously empathetic as a musician (pianists loved him for his legendary ears), but I saw that it extended beyond the bandstand to how he cared for and listened to other people. I got to see him play a number of times, usually with Barry Harris, and it was always beautiful, but I often wish I was around in the 80s when I’ve heard he played almost every night (often at Bradley’s). We’re losing far too many heroes this year—go see them play whenever you get a chance. RAY DRUMMOND by @dansteinbass

Back in NYC!!! (This is coming from Dan, not Ollie, though he is also back on NYC)

This past year in LA has been really fantastic. I’m so grateful for all the friends and collaborators, new and old, who made my time in Cali so memorable. I never thought I would leave New York, and was pretty resistant to it at first, but getting a way for a little bit was a perfect and much needed reset. I’m left with a newfound appreciation for both cities.

Big news: I’m currently driving across the country to Los Angeles, where I will be for the next year while Lizzy completes her fellowship at UCLA. LA friends, let’s play and hang! New York friends—I will be very bicoastal and am keeping a room in NY, so let’s continue to play and hang. Meanwhile I’m on day 2 of a 5 day drive—anyone got music and podcast recs?
