I got it! It wasn't my plan to get this book at #HeroesCon but the opportunity presented itself. I saw another copy at Dave's Comics & Toys @davescomicsandcollectibles booth on Friday that was listed at $1800 and looked about a VG/FN. The next day, I went back in the morning and saw a new raw copy for $2200. This copy was MUCH stronger. We settled on a price, and now it's mine! It was extra special to have my friends around to help me with my decision and experience this with me. Thanks, @colossuscollector @backinthegame_comics @whatsonthecomicrack and @lunchmoneycomicsig

This copy is even better than I had imagined my first copy would be. I checked it closely for color touch and made sure the Value Stamp and all the pages were there. The biggest flaw I could see was the crease at the right bottom edge and issues related to storage; the pages are off-white, and the staples show signs of rust. I realized after I made the deal that I didn't even open the centerfold fully to make sure the staples were holding the page and that rust didn't migrate. Luckily, there is no rust on the inside of the staples, and the pages are firmly attached.

So now what are my plans? I'll likely get this baby cleaned up and pressed and sir on it for a while. I'll probably eventually grade this, too. In it's current state, I graded this a FN+ (6.5). My target fir this book was always a FN so as long as I didn't miss anything, I am very, VERY pleased with this. I'll share my other pickups from the con later this week. by @dansxmencomics

Chasing that higher grade…

I got it! I got my grail on my 2023 collecting goal with my very first comic collection purchase through Craigslist. Long story to follow…

I normally don’t check Craigslist for comics since I can only ever find posts from aggressive collection buyers or 90’s comics in poor condition. But I went on a whim a couple of weeks ago checked the site for comics. I was floored to not only see a post selling comics I was interested in but it also contained my grail a GSXM1! Immediately I turned to my wife and explained the situation: “This is a rare opportunity.” and “I don’t have the money in my comic budget.” Expecting her to talk me off the cliff, she did the opposite and pushed me. She encouraged me to buy it using our saved vacation money as long as I paid it back this year through selling other books in my collection.

After some back and forth emails with the seller about how much I could offer he agreed to meet me at a local bar. As I flipped through the 2 short boxes I saw some other key books but mostly a ton of bronze/copper X-Men. I made an offer solely based on what I thought was FMV for the big book. As I flipped through the Giant-Size book I was surprised by the Dave Cockrum signature at the bottom of the splash page. My immediate thought was “OMG, a Dave Cockrum signature!” then quickly reminded myself that I don’t collect signatures and it could be a fake… but honestly, it made me want it even more! The book was complete with its biggest flaw being a ¼-½ inch tear all the way through the bottom edge of the book.I assessed the grade at VG (4.0) and offered $1400 for the collection unable to hide my excitement. He countered with $1800 and I agreed… (Continued in the comments) by @dansxmencomics

I had a great time in Portland at Northwest ComicCon digging through comic boxes and visiting with friends @farmerted1971 @kkl_comics @bogusdaddy @pnwbreakawaycomics @pixelated_tommy #xmen #markjewelers #comichaul by @dansxmencomics

Looking forward to the NorthWest Comic Con happening today. The show opens at 11am at the Doubletree hotel near the convention center and mall. Can't wait! by @dansxmencomics

Happy #MutantMonday my friends! Today I want to thank @albertcomixs for hooking me up with this X-Men 11 for which I've never owned a copy. I suppose I'm on the path to passively collecting all the #SilverAge #X-Men comics. by @dansxmencomics

Last Sunday I set up a stand of comics at Garage Con II @garageconpdx in Portland. I left Eugene at 5am and set up in time for the show to start at 9am. It was a blast! I was able to make a trade (Batman 144 in dogshit condition for some more X-Men comics), buy some comics I didnt know I needed, and blew past my expectations of what Id be able to sell. I only wish I had more time to shop because that is DEFINITELY the best part. I only took video before noon so Im afraid I didn't get any buying or selling coverage.

Im going to try to make it back up to Portland on October 17th for the comic show at the Double Tree hotel so Ill bring you along there if I can make it. by @dansxmencomics

Sunday, September 27th 9am-3pm
NE Going St. (between NE 23rd & 24th)
Ill be selling these comics and more with 15+ other comic sellers in an outdoor comic yard sale, "Garage Con (Part II)" @garageconpdx
I've been going through my collection, reluctantly deciding what i can live without. Everyone vending there is such a blast to be around like @bogusdaddy @barefootcomix @kkl_comics @stephen.kick and so many more. I can't wait to have more fun chatting and hanging with everyone there again. by @dansxmencomics

#firstappearancefriday is here, baby! Needless to say I am pretty stoked about the recent casting announcements and general hype surrounding the X-Men.

Right now I'm heading up to Portland with my family to attend Rose City Comic Con #RCCC . It's not exactly a "comic" centered convention anymore but we can still have a good ole time with some like-minded obsessive nerds. Have a wonderful weekend, y'all! by @dansxmencomics

Here are my favorite Wolverine comic covers (that I own)... "But, Dan.. why aren't Wolverine 1 or 8, from the 1988 ongoing series on your list?" You might ask... Because I forgot 😅 but they would definitely slip in there somewhere. #wolverinewednesday by @dansxmencomics

About 25 years I went into my comic shop (Emerald City Comics) at the time and asked Stu, our local Simpsons Comic Book Guy, what he might recommend I start collecting. I told him I loved X-Men and Wolverine but wanted something I hadn't read yet. He recommended Deadpool as being a fun, sassy, yet bad ass character to follow. I remembered seeing Deadpool in Marvel cards but didnt really know anything about him.

After reading a few of his solo comics I thought to myself "This guy is trying WAY too hard to be too many things." Every line was cheeky, cheesy, and heavy handed. He'd break the fourth wall and do things that made me lose respect for him before I even had a decent opinion.

Dead Pool flopped for me, and I saw him as one of the characters that broke Marvel by taking things too far and not grounding the character in something I could relate to, understand, or beleive in.

Fast forward about 20 years later and some people would say this is the guy that SAVED Marvel. They might be right, and I might agree. The counter tone he brought into the oversaturated superhero movie boom contrasted the dark, stoic heroes we had been following for years. He made fun of the characters that took themselves so seriously, and presented a self-deprecating comic relief that was desperately needed.

I jumped onto this bandwagon hard. Not because I love the character, but because I love the reaction and response I'm seeing from comic and non-comic fans alike. I'm seeing so many young people and others who have never read a comic before glow when talking about Deadpool or Ryan Reynolds portrayal of the character. Whether because of his charm, absurdity, or sex appeal, its pumped life into this ecosystem and started a wave for us all to ride on again. And its way more fun to ride these waves with others than alone. Have a wonderful weekend y’all! 🤙
