#Repost @elinatbaum with @reposter.app . Today is World Cancer Day. I’m sure all of us have been touched by cancer in some way. This picture is from December 18, 2020 - the day I got my prophylactic double mastectomy because of my BRCA2 mutation. I’ve posted a bit here and there about it, but never really spoke about it on social media. I’m deciding to change that because it is so helpful for everyone to share their stories and to hear other peoples stories. With a BRCA2 mutation, there is a 87% lifetime risk of breast cancer and about a 30% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer. There’s also an increased risk of pancreatic cancer and melanoma. I’m so happy I had the opportunity to have a prophylactic double mastectomy and significantly decrease my risk of breast cancer. A lot of people have commented how “courageous” I was for having this surgery. It’s a weird thing to be called - courageous. I had the surgery because I was absolutely terrified (and truthfully still am terrified of ovarian cancer). Side note - It’s also weird when people say you’re so lucky to have a free boob job — don’t say that to people who have to have a mastectomy. There’s a HUGE difference between cosmetic breast augmentation and breast reconstruction. Here’s my point. Cancer sucks. We all know that. It sucks if you’re going through it and it sucks when it’s constantly something you’re worried about happening. On World Cancer Day, my biggest message is to check your body. If you feel off, go to your provider and get it checked out. Listen to your gut - it could save your life.
