An honour to be invited to attend the Hommage for Jean Kerleo,at L'Osmotheque, Versailles on the evening of September 22nd. An evening of reminiscences and personal and professional anecdotes, honouring the man who founded L'Osmotheque back in 1990 after a career spanning the great moments of French Perfumery. During his time at the house of Jean Patou he created the iconic '1000', Sublime and Voyageur among many others. Honoured for his immense contributions to Perfumery over the span of his life. The evening commenced with a introductory discourse by the current President of the l'Osmotheque, Thomas Fontaine. The following program was ably conducted by Anne-Cecile Pouant- Director of L'Osmotheque and Priscilla Pamart. Numerous colleagues and Perfumers spoke of their own unique memories of Jean Kerleo including Fragrances of the World, Michael Edwards who joined us via a prerecorded segment. Other speakers included Perfumer Patricia de Nicolai, former President of the L'Osmotheque, Perfumer Sarah Labbe, Michel Gutsatz - Perfumer son of founding member and Perfumer Yuri Gutsatz and Daniel Moliere – current researcher and Perfumer at the L'Osmotheque. Each spoke of his gentle nature, kindness, generosity, discipline and dedication to the Art of Perfumery. The evening concluded with a few words from the family of Jean Kerleo followed by a shared moment of conviviality. Thanks to all involved and also to the volunteers and Perfumery students who make these events possible.

If you love the flavours and spices of India, then these are for you, Chai Tabac and Barfi Vanille, truly as delicious as they sound.
Gathering was held at the delicious Jugaad restaurant in Paris. Congratulations my friend. The food and the cocktails at Jugaad were so good that I dined there again during my trip to Paris for the Asian Perfume Show.

An explorers paradise, Day One of Asian Perfume Show in Paris for Fragrances of the World was full of discoveries from previously unknown raw materials to new brands and personalities. Opening up the world with perfumed sensibilities, the more cultures we encounter and embrace, the closer we become. A veritable treasure trove. Also full of the most wonderful people. A very exciting table set by CPL Aromas with delightful feast of Asiatic gastronomy inspired perfumes, all so very inspiring, more to follow.

Days can be so surprising, conversations with Evelyne and Michel Saubaux, the artisan master Cartonnier who created by hand the beautiful boxes for Jean Patou, then for many other classic perfume houses, just fascinating and a truly lost art. We met at the Chateau that once belonged to Josephine Baker, Chateau des Milandes. Our conversation could have gone on for days and its imperative in my opinion that he writes a book on his experiences and recollections of a Golden Age in Perfumery. He started his working life after his training with Jean Patou perfumes at the time when Jean Kerleo was the Perfumer and was also present when several, young, rising designers began their careers at Patou, Christian Lacroix and Jean Paul Gaultier among them . After a number of years with Jean Patou he also created boxes and coffret's for Chanel, Guerlain, Nina Ricci, Givenchy and many others. His was a craft of high artistry at a time when perfume truly embodied the notion of luxury. Jean Patou would order thousands of his boxes at a time and when you look at them closely you can see the refined finishing and the attention to detail. A fascinating man to speak with and conversations to be continued. My thanks to Angelique de Labarre, the owner of Chateau des Milandes for the introduction and for her friendship.

It’s always a privilege for our team to attend Pitti Fragranze, to discover new launches, reconnect with the global fragrance community, and experience the creativity and ideas shaping the next chapter of perfumery. This year, Clayton and Danu attended the 24th edition of the event in Florence, where over 290 brands from around the world exhibited their collections and novelties.

“There is great momentum in the world of fragrances. This does not mean, however, that selecting brands has become any easier. In our vision, Pitti Fragranze is and must continue to be an experience of discovery, research, and depth. An event during which to foster encounters between exhibitors and international buyers, while also spreading olfactory culture through the voices of the sector’s key protagonists,” comments Ivano Cauli, CEO of Pitti Immagine.

Consistent with the city’s reputation for artisanal excellence forged during the Renaissance, Florence came alive with scented events at Pitti Fragranze and around the city. AquaFlor held an immersive event for its new launches; Lorenzo Villoresi hosted press and friends of the house at their atelier to celebrate Vol d’Abaris, the first launch signed by Alessandro Villoresi, perfumer and son of the founder.

Pitti once again delivered an inspiring series of talks and exhibitions, with some brands showing for the first time. Our evaluators noted the continued presence of gourmand fragrances as a trend and the popularity of brands that came to Florence from afar, notably Korea, India and Africa. Cura, the delicate corolla of the iris flower, was the guiding theme of this year’s Pitti, and the team saw modern as well as nostalgic interpretations of classic flowers of perfumery such as the rose and iris.

These days I delve into words, residing inbetween their form and folds and I realise how much is lost and distorted. So, I shall pose a few suggestions-
Beauty , the word, when did we distort away from those creations that touch our core, make us weep, rip veils of illusion from our eyes, draw raw emotions from our depths. The 'genius point' of a piece of music, an artists mastery, writing that draws us close, poetry that moves us, a garden blooming with love, a meal whose main ingredient is care and nuture, the gaze that sees our magnificence. Nature in all her wonder, terrifyingly beautiful. When was this superceded by artificial imagery, by the artificial and fake , the botox, the ozempic, starving our precious form to the edge of existence
