Crimson pitcher plant illustration to place in habitat space for new project celebrating biodiversity of Alabama for @inkdwell. These carnivorous plants grow in low-nutrient longleaf pine forests, getting vital nutrients from the insects they digest.

INHABIT: Red Currant & Bumble Bee
2026
acrylic on canvas
48 x 48 in

INHABIT: Red Currant & Bumble Bee features a cool sun shining on a bumble bee visiting a flowering red currant. Bulky, fuzzy bumble bees emerge earlier and are able to forage at lower temperatures than other bees and relies on early spring blooms like the red currant. Such nuances in pollinator behavior and biodiversity are sometimes missed in conversations about plant pollination dominated by the agriculturally important honey bee. 3,600 bee species call North America home, playing important roles in every habitat they inhabit.

Last week to see SPECTRUM @andranorrisgallery 311 Lorton Ave., Burlingame.

This piece was such a joy to make and I love seeing people interact with the spinning mechanism in the gallery. Swipe through to see the rotating mount construction in process, a work of art in itself by my talented stepfather, Michael Steffen.

SPINNING: Ceanothus Silkmoth, 2026
acrylic on panel (with rotating mount)
47 x 47 in

SPINNING: Ceanothus Silkmoth explores the relationship between moths and light. By keeping their back to bright celestial lights, including the moon, moths can fly in a straight line. Close, artificial lights confuse this process, causing them to constantly correct their angle and spiral towards the artificial light. In this piece, a female moth waits, releasing pheromones to attract a mate. It is not clear whether the light at the center is indeed the moon and her companion is flying away after having found her, or a bulb, and in confusion he spins out of sight. Adult ceanothus silkmoths are unable to feed themselves; with a brief window to complete their lifecycle, the need to find each other is acute. The night sky is an increasingly rare commodity, and this piece acts as a reminder to, when possible, let the moon light the way.

On view as a part of SPECTRUM @andranorrisgallery 311 Lorton Ave., Burlingame, through the end of July.

KALEIDOSCOPE: Manzanita, 2018
acrylic on canvas
48 x 48 in

KALEIDOSCOPE: Manzanita celebrates the foliage of manzanita, and its enchanting, urn-shaped flowers. Manzanitas have adapted to thrive in hot, dry conditions that few other species can tolerate, providing refuge and food for many in the chaparral communities of California.

On view as a part of SPECTRUM @andranorrisgallery 311 Lorton Ave., Burlingame, through the end of July.

KALEIDOSCOPE: Western Columbine
acrylic on canvas
48 x 48 in

The species name for western columbine is Aquilegia formosa. Derived from the Latin word 'aquila' meaning eagle, a reference to the talon-like petals that house nectar, and ‘formosa’ meaning beautiful. The ‘beautiful talons’ of the western columbine are particularly good nectar sources for hummingbirds and hawkmoths in the water-rich habitats of western North America.

I love seeing this piece paired with Gary Bukovnik's superb watercolors. On view as a part of SPECTRUM @andranorrisgallery 311 Lorton Ave., Burlingame, through the end of July.

SHIFT: Monarch & Milkweed
acrylic on canvas
48 x 48 in

SHIFT: Monarch & Milkweed explores the intrinsic connection between the monarch butterfly and milkweed plant. The monarch caterpillar will only feed on the milkweed plant, without milkweed the monarch butterfly would cease to exist. The monarch has captured our imagination and become a flagship species for conservation efforts, connecting communities and ecosystems through their epic migrations across North America. Efforts to protect monarchs result in more biodiverse ecosystems that benefit all residents; plant, animal, and human alike.

On view as a part of SPECTRUM @andranorrisgallery 311 Lorton Ave., Burlingame, through the end of July.
