How do we let go in a world that asks us to carry so much?

What you’re holding right now? The news, the to do list, the text you haven’t answered yet. Your worries, someone else’s worries. The way you think things should be and the feelings you’re trying not to feel.

In yoga, the clinging is called raga and the pushing away is called dvesha. Both part of the kleshas, the afflictions of the mind, both things cloud the mind and cause suffering because whether we grip something or shove it away, our attention stays on the the thing, and when attention is on the thing, it isn’t here in the body, or in this breath, or in the present moment- our only reality.

So we practice turning toward what we’re holding and getting curious. When you really look, it isn’t as solid as it seems. It shifts and changes and seeing that clearly loosens the grip on its own.

In the practice you can notice the feeling and you can a notice the thoughts about the feeling, and then wonder who is the one noticing? That’s you, the one watching it all. What you’re carrying is passing through you, and you are the space it moves through.

New weekly vinyasa yoga classes at The Mothership in Lambertville: Tuesdays at 5:45PM + Thursdays at 12PM

I’m so grateful to be teaching here. The Mothership is in the former Mt Carmel Baptist Church, which was home for decades to Lambertville’s Black Baptist congregation, in a building dating back to 1897. It feels like an honor together for practice in a place with that history.

Beth has built something so rare here, a studio made with mothers and families in mind, with prenatal and postnatal, monthly motherhood gatherings, and a drop in childcare on the way. So much love and care has gone into the space. Thank you, Beth for having me.

These classes are open to all levels and designed for longevity. Challenging flow that builds strength and flexibility, woven with pranayama, meditation, and philosophy, plus hands-on assist and a fun playlist. You’ll leave worked, steady, with a calmer mind and more open heart, and a little more at home in your body.

Each season we move with a different meridian pair from TCM. This fall it’s lung and large intestine, which is all about letting go 🌬️

Can’t wait to see you on the mat 🤍 come as you are

33 of the most precious, beautiful, wise, compassionate and joyful beings came together this weekend in the sacred crater of Menla, the most dreamlike place, to practice all the paths that lead us back home to our true nature, our inner sanctuary.

It was so magical.

Held in all that beauty we got to practice living in right relationship with the Earth, and feel how she holds and supports us right back. Every day the trees turned a little more orange and red. Such a reminder that change is the only constant, and the more we resist it, the more we try to stay the same or control or grip or cling on, the harder it all gets. It’s the grip that makes everything so hard.

Letting go only becomes easy when we remember we belong to the whole. There’s nothing to change or fix, just wake up with a little bit more kindness and non judgment.

Pranayama, meditation, yoga, myofascial release, each other. That’s how we train to be adaptable, yet unwavering in our true nature, our inner sanctuary, which is always whole, never tarnished, never missing a piece.

And when we really remember we belong to the whole, that we’re in relationship with everything, the Earth, the air, the water, the bees, the flowers, the trees, the river, each other, compassion just naturally arises. The heart remembers how boundless and spacious it is, how it can hold all beings with love, without exception.

Lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu
May all beings everywhere be happy and free

I always get a good chuckle as a teacher because I need these teachings more than anyone. The students already got it, they are it. Pure love, pure joy. This group was the biggest reminder of how much beauty and goodness is here, in a world that can feel so dark and so uncertain, what a gift.

And Stacia, my dear dear friend. It is the biggest joy to lead these retreats with you. You are so strong and intuitive and grounded and fierce, and the teachings just rise from you like your breath. I love how we balance each other. And @amritayoga215 @heatherriceyoga for making everything so perfect.

My heart is full. Thank you @menlaretreat @namastacia @amritayoga215 and every single one of you. by @daphne_lyon

I’ve been sitting with a lot of anger lately. Rage, honestly. I open my phone, see you then injustice of the day, and feel it climb straight into my chest.

I keep coming back to my teacher Tara Brox, wisdom on radical acceptance. Her invitation is to turn toward the feeling. To meet the anger was curious non-judging attention and ask what it’s about.

Where do I feel it? For me it’s the chest, tight, a little tingly, like a current running through.

Stay a few breaths longer, and it often shifts. Underneath the anger there’s usually something more tender, fear for the world, fear for people safety. So you open to that too, where does the fear live in the body?

Keep going and eventually you land in the heart, in caring. Caring for life, for all beings, for the people this happened to.

And it’s from that space where we can move into action.

Radical acceptance gets mistaken, for surrender, for giving up. But it’s actually what makes real action possible. You let yourself stay embodied, which is our most empowered state of being and then we can respond to the world from this grounded and aligned heart centered space.

So an invitation to take a breath
Put the phone down
Check in with your body
Make the U-turn back home to your heart

And if turning toward, it feels like too much right now, that’s good information too. Open your eyes feel your feet on the floor and come back another time.

One breath is all it takes to shift your state.

BREATHWORK IN THE SALT CAVE
9•26 | 3-5pm
@mt.rose.center.hopewell.nj
Mt Rose Center (formerly Sault Haus)

Join us for integrative breathwork. We start with slow flow breathing to train the body to tolerate more CO2 so it gets better at using oxygen and settling into rest. Then we move into conscious connected breathwork, a more active practice that moves old stories and stuck emotions through and out.

No experience needed. A few spots remain.
