Stardust.
.
.

Recently finished painting this guitar for @ellen_vaughan – we talked about giving it a 1960s look so I had a lot of fun deciding how it was going to look. The three eyes near the bottom belong to the Hindu goddess of death, time and change – Kali. The word “stardust” comes from one of my favourite 1960s songs, “Woodstock” by Joni Mitchell: “we are stardust, we are golden, we are billion-year-old carbon, and we’ve got to get ourselves back to the garden”.

Red II.

Played a lot of Red Dead Redemption II over the last few months. One of the best games ever made for sure, really enjoyed it. After drawing John Marston it only felt right to draw Arthur Morgan as well. Couple of weeks ago I had COVID so there wasn’t really anything else to do in self isolation except draw, so I got stuck in for the first time in a few months. Yeehaw!

Faces.

Some research sketches I did back at the start of first year based on 19th century French composite photographs of violent criminals. There was a belief in criminology at the time that facial anatomy could be used to determine whether or not one was more likely to commit crimes. Pseudoscience notwithstanding, the photographs made for cool drawing references and nice crosshatching practice with a biro pen. Only found these again today, and it’s weird to look at as I’m about to start final year. Hopefully I can still do some drawing over the next few months, so stay hyped.

Franka Potente in the German film ‘Run Lola Run’ (1998). I was planning to draw the hair with a red biro or pencil but any time I’ve tried that kind of combination before the results have been less than satisfying, so I left it off. Soundtrack: Ride A White Swan / T. Rex.

It’s been a minute since I did any proper drawing, so I’m a bit out of practice. Based this one off a photo by @derekridgers of a skinhead girl in 1980’s London. Soundtrack: If The Kids Are United / Sham 69.

Jazz.

Cab Calloway was one of the greatest jazz band leaders of the 20th century. He also helped to popularise zoot suits; a stylish cat indeed. This drawing is very old now (2016) but I noticed I didn’t have it on this page, so I’m also using it to make an announcement; I’ve decided to separate all my design work from my illustration and put it on a different page - mainly just to keep a more consistent theme/aesthetic going. Just finishing up bits on the other page so it should be ready soon. Take a look @dara.graf - Until then, stay jazzy. Soundtrack: Initiation / Mondo Drag.

Haven’t been very productive recently. Took some time off drawing, so it’s great to get back into it. With everything that’s been happening this year, I think it’s more important than ever for all of us to look after our mental health. It’s easy to feel anxious or worried (especially about the future), but I’ve found that it can help to use our time in positive ways. Catch up with mates, spend time with family if you can, get outside, and don’t be watching the news for too long. Despite experiencing personal difficulties throughout his life, Vincent van Gogh maintained a determined mindset towards his work, and it was often a reflection of his emotions and experiences. I based this drawing off my favourite self-portrait by Van Gogh; painted in 1887, his use of stippled colour inspired me to use dots in my own version. Really enjoyed this one, and hopefully I can do a few more like it soon. Soundtrack: Wish You Were Here/Pink Floyd.

Alternative design I did for the Chopin poster competition. A little bit less off the wall, but I still thought it was kinda cool. Soundtrack: Son Of A Gun (Oliver Ferdinand Remix)/Jungle.

Żal.
.
.
.
This year marks the 210th anniversary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin (1810 – 1849). He's recognised as one of the greatest musicians in history for his innovative techniques, as well as his work's association with the Polish Romantic movement.
The idea for my poster design was based on the Polish word "Żal", which has no direct English translation. It roughly means sadness, or a feeling of loss – which Chopin experienced during his life, and the influence of which can be seen on his work. "Żal" is seen as a characteristic of Poland as a whole, having endured a long history of loss and hardship.
