CREOLE HERITAGE MONTH | THE STORY BEGINS HERE

This month, we begin with the foundation.

Before the music, before the language, before the traditions we celebrate as Creole, there are stories of people whose lives were shaped by a brutal colonial system.

This series begins by bringing forward the experiences of enslaved women in the French Caribbean.

Women who were forcibly removed from their homes and transported across the Atlantic and throughout the Caribbean. Women who were forced into plantation labour, including working the fields, while also enduring exploitation, violence, sexual abuse, separation from their children and families, and the constant denial of their humanity.

What you see in this short clip is only a glimpse of a much larger historical series being developed by Home of Creole Arts and Culture.

From Creole Heritage Month, we will continue this journey through a series of historical stories and visual depictions, leading into February and Black History Month, where the story will unfold further through the history of Saint Lucia. A deeper look into the history that shaped an island, its people, and generations that came after.

Home of Creole Arts and Culture is rooted in a collective of Saint Lucians and members of the wider Caribbean community, including people connected to Saint Lucia, Martinique, the United States and Canada, coming together to preserve, explore, and bring greater visibility to our history and culture. by @darcikin

First clip shown creole fest full February

This is only the beginning.

A glimpse into the story of enslaved women, their strength, their suffering, their survival, and the history that was carried through generations.

This short clip is the first piece of a series leading into February, offering a visual depiction of experiences that are often spoken about in history, but rarely brought to life in a way that allows us to truly pause, reflect, and remember.

Their stories deserve to be remembered.
Their voices deserve to be heard.
Their resilience deserves to be honored.

The full historical presentation will be showcased at Creole Fest, where I hope you will come and experience what I have been putting together.

This is not just a performance.
It is a journey into history, identity, memory, and the strength of women whose stories helped shape generations.

This is only the beginning. More to come.

Today, I had the pleasure of speaking with CBC about Creole culture and why it is important to continue amplifying our stories, our language, our arts, and our heritage.

I am truly grateful to CBC for consistently creating space to capture the stories that matter to our communities. Representation matters. When our stories are told, our history is preserved, our voices are heard, and future generations gain a deeper understanding of who we are and where we come from.

Creole is more than a language. It is a living expression of our identity, our resilience, our creativity, and the history we carry across generations. Our music, dance, traditions, and cultural expressions deserve to be recognized, celebrated, and preserved as part of Canada’s rich cultural landscape.

This is why the work of amplifying Creole arts, culture, language, and heritage is so important. It is about more than celebrating who we are today. It is about ensuring that the generations coming after us have something meaningful to inherit.

Thank you, CBC, for taking the time to listen, document, and share our stories. Every opportunity to bring our culture into the conversation is an opportunity to build greater awareness, understanding, and appreciation.

Our stories matter. Our culture matters. Our heritage deserves to be seen, heard, and celebrated. 🇱🇨❤️🇨🇦

🥁 A HIDDEN GEM IS COMING TO CREOLE FEST 2026.

For some time, we have spoken about developing youth drumming workshops and creating opportunities for young people to learn, practice, and carry forward the musical traditions of Saint Lucia.

We kept asking, Who will lead it?

And sometimes, God has already prepared the answer before we even see it.

Now, we are proud to introduce a 16 year old youth drummer from Saint Lucia, bringing the rhythm of our island to the Creole Fest stage.

This is more than a performance. It is a glimpse of what we envision for the future of our Creole Arts, Culture, Language & Heritage programming.

🥁 Young talent.
Saint Lucian rhythm.
Culture carried forward.

More to come as we introduce this young drummer and the traditional drum he plays. by @darcikin
