Soon we get to meet some of the wonderful characters in Cut Chilli by @chenturan. Allow Chenturan to introduce you to Jamie, Zahra and Katherine.

“What I most enjoyed about writing all three of them is that they are funny because they are wounded, not in spite of it. They are all trying to survive discomfort through performance: Jamie performs charm, Zahra performs certainty, Katherine performs resilience. So I’m excited to see what this cast finds underneath those performances.”

@thevoiceinmyhands and @elbow_room_theatre return to Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre next week to co-host a scratch night. This time, local artists will be given 10mins to perform a skit, monologue, or an excerpt from an epic all about dedication. The evening will feature:

Although Cut Chilli tackles serious subject matter, writer @chenturan assures us that at the heart of it, the play is a comedy.

“Comedy gives people permission to breathe inside material that might otherwise feel too heavy or too direct... It lowers our guard. And once the guard is lowered, you can reach something more human.”

Director Isabella Vadiveloo adds, “It’s reminiscent of real life too – especially for those from marginalised cultures – there is extreme heaviness and extreme humour and joy in existing across different cultural worlds and value systems, in feeling and experiencing relationships to their fullest.”

This August, Darebin welcomes the Melbourne premiere of a scorching new comedy about facing difficult histories to find vulnerability, truth and acceptance.
Chenturan Aran teams up with a new director, cast and design team to bring something very special to a Melbourne audience. Each artist brings a new perspective to the work.

Chenturan explains: “Having Isabella Vadiveloo direct the work changes the centre of gravity. As a woman with Sri Lankan Tamil heritage, she brings a new lens to the material… She is also a new mother, and this experience I’m sure will inform the way she engages with this work, which is as much about motherhood as anything else.”

“I’m also looking forward to seeing how Ishan Vivekanatham’s can respond to the play’s cross-ocean imagination… the movement between Australia and Sri Lanka, suburbia and mythology, the restaurant and the ancestral homeland.”

We can’t wait to see what this Melbourne creative team bring to the stage!
