My first @nts_radio mix, Deep Roots, hits the airwaves of the internet this weekend! Tune in Sunday at 11:00 AM EST 🌱

As part of the supporter radio series, mixes were curated by the NTS team on the theme of roots. I selected the songs in collaboration with my Mom, with the intention of creating a sonic space that honors the music that my grandparents loved. Sheik, my grandfather, was a Guyanese American man who fell in love with Muriel, my grandmother, a black women from DC. The music they shared spans Brazilian Music, Funk, Latin Jazz and R&B. This mix, titled Deep Roots, honors not only the love they shared, but the connection my family and I continue to share with them through music.

If you told kid me I would be getting two degrees from Harvard, I’d turn my head to the side a little. We’re here though, Masters degree in Architecture, check. Endless gratitude to all the people who I wouldn’t be here without, you know who you are. Excited for what’s to come ✨ taken in Harvard Graduate School of Design by @dariencarr_

Architect, writer, and DJ @dariencarr_ is one of the most interesting people I know. At the time that we met, I had a tendency to categorize people rather neatly. You were either an athlete or an artist, committed either to the mind or the body. Everything was either/or. I didn’t have the maturity or life experience to understand that the people who are the most curious—and, I would argue, the most free—feel comfortable taking on various identities.

Darien surprised me. They played football for our alma mater and released albums under the moniker Rico Alice. In an environment that rewarded conformity, I admired their ability to trust their instincts and lean into what they enjoyed doing.

After receiving a degree in Social Studies, Darien went on to receive a Master’s in Architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. At the heart of their creative practice is an interest in “the ontology of architecture as a temporal act, as it relates to society, sound culture, and diaspora.” Darien’s relationship to space is deeply rooted in music; the bio for their Soundcloud, the home of Desire Lines, a series of mixes they release monthly, is fittingly described as “tracing space through sound.”

For the latest edition of the Daydream Dispatch, Darien reflects on their evolving relationship to architecture, a visit to the Menil Collection in Houston, and more. Read at the link in bio 🔗 by @dariencarr_

I was part of the Design Team and Sound Team responsible for bringing this “Classroom of the Future” to life. By far, one of the most inspiring projects I’ve been involved with to date. All courtesy of @nolabel.live and @idk — I’ll never forget this feeling, incredibly grateful for all the energy shared by the students, speakers and collaborators. Blessed to be a part of this. 📸 @w.dmnd

Listening to music at high volumes is one of the experiences I miss most when living in an apartment.

Traveling between New York and Maryland this summer has given me a chance to do just that: dance to loud music in living rooms, cars and patios. It’s made me remember how important Hip-Hop and trap is to my musical DNA, which even has translated to what I’ve been putting on riding the subway and walking around Brooklyn.

Desire Lines 007 is an all hip-hop and trap selection, featuring the kind of synthesized, faux-string section infused, auto-tuned haze like sample laden beats bringing me joy and energy.

Dear Listener,

Tracing space through sound, the idea behind Desire Lines, has always brought with it a few questions. Namely, in each episode, what is the space that the sound is evoking? The easiest thing to do would be describing each episode through genre, but that doesn’t align with my approach to the show, or how I listen to music.

I’ve been keeping this question in mind with each episode.

It’s only now that I’m starting to understand the Desire Line of each episode as tracing the space in between, not only genres, but also the time periods and audiences that music circulates within. It’s 100% subjective too. The sounds are curated by the places and spaces I’m in, and what I or the people I’m around decide to put on while we live.

What excites me most is weaving together a space of sound by virtue of connecting and juxtaposing the songs I love. This episode holds the relationships between Surf Gang’s production, James Messiah and Boards of Canada, the synthscapes of Loraine James and Smerz, the vocals of Eliza and Momoko Gill…

Happy with how this one turned out.

See you next month,

DL5. Music is shelter, sound is nourishment.

Dearest listener,

Episode 005 is a love letter of sorts; in some ways it’s a love letter to sound itself. I usually record these episodes on Sundays, but this session was recorded Saturday evening before going out. The energy isn’t too high, but the presence of the dancefloor on this one is more tangible compared to the other DL releases.

Since I’m spending most of my time practicing on vinyl, it felt liberating returning to the digital format. The joy with digital is a combination of the ability to buy individual songs, and also, think more about how the mix from song to song is composed and sculpted. I’m really excited to get to a point (and a set up) where I can have more authorship in the merging the physical and digital logics of the mix.

I’ll leave you all with lyrics from “Be My Shelter”, a new song from Fred Everything and Atjazz. It was one of the highlights of this month’s episode: “I’d like to call you home, cause you feel like home, like a shelter, a shelter from the pain.”

While these lyrics can be interpreted as finding comfort in a person, playing today brought on the feeling of finding shelter in sound. The feeling is easy to romanticize, which makes it easy to miss all the nuance going into that sentiment. With the intention of Desire Lines, tracing space through sound, each episode tries to sound a bit of how that shelter manifests.

Until next month,

𝒟𝑒𝓈𝒾𝓇𝑒 𝐿𝒾𝓃𝑒𝓈 | Episode 004. Recorded in Brooklyn, this one is an all-vinyl selection.

I’ve been quietly building my record collection over the past couple of years and have fallen in love with the tactility and intimacy of mixing physical records. Almost every piece in here carries a memory, so weaving them into an hour felt like the right kind of Desire Line.

Desire Lines Episode 003 | We float through jazz and soul before landing in the dancefloor pocket, with some vinyl from recent travels that sounds just right in the springtime light. Link in bio and letter to listeners below.

 Dearest Listener,

This month’s episode was recorded in Brooklyn NY after travel to Bejuco, Costa Rica and Houston, Texas. Being closer to the equator made summer feel closer than it is, but still, at least this is the first DL episode I’m dropping with no snow on the ground.

The winter to spring sound is in full effect on this one. The show starts off with new music from Ego Ella May, Ragz Originalle, Nubian Twist and Modha. With each releasing a new album for 2026, I love how the music from each artist sounds open yet danceable. I don’t always give enough credit to how much jazz has shaped my ear, but certain rhythms and pockets in electronic music always bring me back to it. I felt that especially in the opening stretch, and again playing Moonlight from Shy One & Kawnini by Ewa Williams.

I have a few gigs coming up, so you can hear me getting back in the mood to DJ outside again in the later part of the episode. I took a detour into what I had planned and decided to mix a few vinyls I picked up on my travels. Not a lot of people know, but I’ve been really into vinyl for the past year or so. It felt really rewarding to give the disks I’ve been collecting some airtime, mixing them live and having a nice dance in the sunlight of my living room.

Until next time,
