Religion and philosophy have been at the forefront my life since I was about 7 years old. Around about 2006/2007, my family converted to Islam. You could say it created a sort of portal for me as a young child. A portal to a deeper understanding of "way of life" and differences and similarities amongst the people of the world. If I'm honest, I was not aware of religions outside of Christianity. I even thought that everyone was born Christian as a default. Conversion broadened my horizons, and maybe in some aspects, saved my life. Not necessarily because of Islam, but more about learning that there was more to life than what I was told. And that there always will be. Yeshua-Isa-Jesus seemed to follow where ever I went. Maybe sometimes, much to my dismay. I had to change the narrative for my own sake. Making Jesus less of a God and more of a human. More like a friend from down the street, more like your local bookstore owner, more like a mother, a father, a brother, a sister that you could hold, and more like me. I think I could grasp him better in that way; he wasn't so severely out of reach. An equal: In humanness and in divinity. As we became closer, he became a member of my pantheon of spiritual teachers and political leaders. That's what he was, a political leader. A man assassinated by the ruling government for uniting others, giving them hope, helping them understand their own divinity, and preaching peace and resistance. A tale as old as time. The face of revolutionary suicide. The someone I needed to look to as I fight to understand the current state of human existence and ponder: "What can I do"?

I had a book when I was much younger titled, "What Would Jesus Do"?

Yeah, what would* Jesus do?

"I ask God to send a swordsman, and God says 'look at your hands.'" - Melissa Broder
It was very important to me that I got to present these feelings to you, like this. That there had to be seven pieces. They had to be these colors. They had to be composed just like this because I had a story to tell. The story of recovery, tragedy, triumph, self-destruction, self-construction, misfortune, heartbreak, and ego death . Something changed in me, and I had no other choice but to let it out. I can't keep acting like it doesn't (didn't) hurt. The heaviness, however, is all out of me. This is what I wanted to say. And I'm lighter now because I said it and because I saved myself. And I will continue to do so. That is my duty. And I can move on now. For real this time. There's still work to do, but I no longer want to be an obstacle in my way. Thank you to all who came to my BFA show. It was a beautiful note to end my undergraduate career on. The journey is never-ending, but I look forward to what life will bring me and what I will bring to my life. 🗡

Hopped off the gram to tend to my seven children here and my well-being. I really can't wait to explain the lore behind these drawings and show the processes. Thank you for being with me to watch them grow. And thank you for watching me grow with them. This is probably my most reflective series. Im excited to share...❤️‍🔥🗡 BFA Exhibition opens April 2nd through the 26th

(It ain't dry, so weird lighting to prevent glare) I had a spectacular year. Every year has had its life lessons, especially these last 3 years, but this one takes the cake as the most influential. I felt like I was really challenged to go deeper, deeper than I ever have, because I needed to learn to let go and love myself. I kept asking myself, by the words of the great Jhené Aiko, "Why hold onto something you have to let go of?" So I did. I let go of past events (from this year and years before), of people, of hurtful situations, and of a lot of self-hatred. All this took up too much space. My space. I'm coming back to me and I want to just be with me for a while. Mindful solitude. I'm not alone, though. I've met some of the most gorgeous souls this year and strengthened connections with other gorgeous souls. What more could I ask for? I'm more myself than I ever been. And next year will be so so so amazing and life changing. I'm claiming that now. The past exists as only a memory now. It can not touch me if I don't let it. I'm not defined by it. I take my lessons, thank God for them, and try again. I'm not perfect. I'm doing my best!

Someone asked me if I ever felt weird about drawing myself nude and making it public. I'm going to be honest, I didn't really notice. It's very second nature, but a journey for sure. Not to be all deep and psychological, but as a PSYCH MINOR, I think this nude exploration is more about self-acceptance and my need for vulnerability. By definition(s), vulnerability means "susceptible to physical or emotional attack or harm." I have been overprotective* of myself, and I missed out on some very crucial and fun times. I locked myself away out of fear of pain. In being open, I also open myself up to being hurt or crushed. I've been hurt. I've been crushed. I am becoming okay with that. There's no life in predicting the unpredictable. It is out of my control (thank goodness). Gray area. I, too, recognize that not everyone deserves my open, raw, and vulnerable side. That's where my true protection exercises action. As stated before, I'm in the midst of making a beautiful, sacred, safe space for myself. I think this is a visual representation of that. There's a kind of beauty in my vulnerability. It's scary. It's scary to be raw like this, but how would anyone know who I am if I don't show them? How would I learn if I shield myself from experience? The good and the bad. I want you to know me without the shame I give myself (at least not too much shame).

Tchaikovsky, anyone? Anywho, I have so so so soooo many ideas. Too many! And I'm eager, willing, and able to show them to you all. There's a passion in my belly that is finally ready to listen* and speak. I love to be open and honest. The doors to my heart are ones that can not be shut. I've tried, but that is not my nature. Perhaps life has given me reason to shut away, but it has also given me reason to open up, stay open, and continue to love and explore. It's not black and white (shouout to my therapist). Keeping it short and sweet, my life is super duper worth living, feeling, and exploring. I don't think so all the time, but that doesn't stop it from being true. #wip by @darisartstuff
