The Hiroshima Series by Wolfgang Grässe (1982, acrylic on paper) echoes the same quiet devastation found in Francisco Goya’s master works "Disasters of War"—images that don’t ask for beauty, only that we look and remember.

Art doesn’t exist to comfort us. It reminds us who we are—capable of tenderness, mercy, and of total self-insured ruin.

Born in Tangier, Morocco in 1944, José Hernández emerged as a visionary of the macabre, a conjurer of nightmarish beauty where dream and decay intertwine. From his haunting early sketches of “angry cats” to his phantasmagoric engravings and theatrical designs, Hernández built a world steeped in surreal gloom and poetic torment. His art — in the spectral spirit of Lorca, Kafka, Rimbaud, Albright and at times Francis Bacon's tortured spaces — between madness and mysticism, revealing faces of anguish and desire lost in shadow. A painter, engraver, illustrator, and scenographer, Hernández earned acclaim across Spain and Europe. Even after his death in 2013, his dark imagination still breathes — a timeless elegy etched in ink, paint and the grotesque.

Head of a Guillotined Man
🖤 Painted from life by Théodore Géricault (1818–19) This isn’t just a study in anatomy—it’s a confrontation with death itself. Géricault, obsessed with the raw truth of the body, sourced corpses from the Paris morgue to capture decay in vivid detail. The Guillotine was the chosen form of execution. Surrounded by the scent of death, he created a series, some may say a beautiful yet chilling collection of work.

Based in the U.S. and Poland respectively, Dark Art & Craft presents VOLT IN HOLT original works through singular techniques, each driven by their own distinct creative vision: painting with electricity. Wolfgang Grässe (1930 - 2008) "Kingdom of Death" (one of our favorite Artists and painters here at @darkartandcraft ) was a modern figurative and fantastic realist painter. The Artist's most striking work combines the traditional masters such as; Bruegel, Bosch, Huys and Van Eyck with the violent narrative of our current world. Created with the concentration and detail of an Artist who survived the bombing of Dresden, the horrors of the World War and years in a Polish Gulag, Grässe painted a vision of realistic turmoil.
