On March 17th, I lost my hipbone, “Lil Barry”, to RMC. His smile, his kindness, and his unwavering spirit will never be forgotten. He was a true fighter. I was literally the second person he called when things took a turn. Even when the doctors gave up hope, he refused to give up himself. He always told me he wouldn’t, and I reminded him how much we needed him.

Those FaceTime calls where he vented, where we cried & prayed together. I’ll treasure those moments forever. Deep down, I couldn’t accept that one day I would have to face this reality. I thank God for the 1 year and 10 months, I spent by his side literally at his hip lying beside him in hospital beds hearing him say with that familiar smile, “Meek, you wanna argue with me?” when I would try to boss him around. I’ll never forget reminding him not to ask where I was because he had my location , and how I’d check on him whenever he napped, even calling his wife just to make sure he was okay. It still doesn’t feel real. The tears won’t stop.

Thirty-nine feels far too young, and I keep asking, “Why him?” He was such a good person. He would always apologize if I spent too much time at the hospital, always mindful of others even in his own pain. I’m grateful he trusted me, made me his go-to person, comfortable enough to lean on me when he couldn’t on anyone else. I promise to keep our boy together and spare him, just like he always asked me to. I hated having to tell him the news his exact words were, “But Mom, we didn’t get to ride the dirt bikes and four-wheelers like he said we would.” The time spent with Nas will be deeply missed; he knew one thing Lil Barry’s word was bond.

Cancer may have taken him, but it never broke his spirit. That’s what hurts the most. I’ll miss bringing him our favorite shrimp & grits, his crazy rice, Twix, and sour cream ruffles. I saw his strength, even when I tried to ignore the signs. I didn’t want to be selfish I know the pain he endured was unbearable but I just wasn’t ready to imagine life without him.

I’ve been thinking about this moment for a long time. Ever since I was 17, I made you a promise and today, I finally get to keep it.

You’ve always been in my corner, no matter what. You never told me no, even when life wasn’t easy. You showed up for me, supported me, believed in me, and loved me in a way that shaped who I am today. There’s no way I could ever fully repay you for that… but this is a piece of my heart, given back to you.

I wanted you to have something that brings you joy every time you see it, every time you drive it. Something that reminds you how much you mean to me and how grateful I am to call you (my nigga). 🤞🏾♥️ Im solid as they come 🤭
