🌄 Watch the last light settle over the outback from Mount Oxley, near Bourke.

Known to local Aboriginal people as Oombi Oombi, this striking landmark rises above the surrounding plains. It’s a special place to take in the wide western horizon and experience the stillness of the country.

Mount Oxley is on private property, so a day pass is required before visiting. Check with the Back O’ Bourke Information and Exhibition Centre for access details.

Did you know?

Near the Kinchega Shearing Shed at Menindee is the old Killing Shed. This steel-framed building, clad in corrugated iron, was probably built in the 1950s. The pivot pole inside was used to suspend carcasses.

The shed is a reminder of the self-sufficiency of outback stations, which produced much of their own food for station residents and workers.

Kinchega Station once covered an enormous area. An estimated six million sheep passed through its woolshed before it became part of Kinchega National Park in 1967. Take time to explore these historic buildings and imagine station life in the days when wool was king.

Look for the Killing Shed when you visit Kinchega National Park on the Darling River Run.

🧡 Make Mungo National Park an unforgettable stop on your Darling River Run adventure.

Part of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area, Mungo brings together extraordinary landscapes and layers of human history. Explore the ancient lakebed, learn about significant archaeological discoveries and discover the deep, continuing connection Aboriginal Traditional Owners have with this Country.

The park also offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s pastoral past. Visit the historic Mungo Woolshed, built in 1869, and explore the remains of Zanci Homestead, where old buildings, shearing yards and stables recall life on the area’s former sheep stations.

For a deeper understanding of Mungo, join the two-hour Mungo Lunette Guided Tour led by an experienced NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Aboriginal guide. The Wentworth Visitor Centre is now an official booking agent, making it easier to secure your place.

Tours operate most days and bookings are essential. Visitors travel to the Mungo Visitor Centre in their own vehicle, and park entry and camping fees apply.

🦅 There’s nothing quite like coming face-to-face with one of Australia’s great birds of prey.

A Wedge-tailed Eagle soars straight towards the camera above the vast landscape of Gundabooka National Park - a spectacular reminder of just how wild and expansive Outback NSW can be.

Just south of Bourke, Gundabooka is a rewarding stop on the Darling River Run, with dramatic landscapes, walking trails, Aboriginal cultural heritage and plenty of opportunities to encounter outback wildlife.

When visiting Wentworth on the Darling River Run, make sure you stop at Junction Park, where two of Australia’s great rivers finally meet.

Climb the Junction Viewing Tower for a bird’s-eye view of the confluence of the Darling and Murray Rivers. When the Darling is flowing, you may even see the distinct difference in colour between the clay-based waters of the Darling and the Murray as they come together.

Opened in 1991, the viewing tower has 35 steps leading to the platform and provides one of the best vantage points for appreciating this significant meeting of the rivers.

Junction Park itself is a great place to stop and spend some time by the water, with BBQ facilities, toilets and a playground.

For travellers following the Darling River Run, it’s a fitting place to stand and watch the Darling complete its long journey through Outback NSW and join the mighty Murray.

Wildflowers are bringing colour to the Darling River Run, and the milder spring days are made for exploring before the summer heat arrives. Pack the camera, take your time and see what’s blooming along the way.

Did you know emu dads do all this?

➜ Sit on the eggs for around eight weeks - without eating or drinking.

➜ Raise the chicks themselves once they hatch.

➜ Show their little ones how to find food and protect them from predators.

➜ Keep their chicks close for up to two years.

What a top dad! Keep an eye out for emu dads and their chicks this spring - we’re expecting to see plenty about! 💛
