Ranging from less than a quarter-inch to a micrometer, microplastics have been found literally everywhere on Earth—food, fresh water, ice frozen at the poles, and soils. Even more penetrable and pervasive than microplastics are nanoplastics, particles 1 micrometer and below, “measured in billionths of a meter” (Gao and Lang, pg. 3, 2024). Nanoplastics are found just about everywhere microplastics exist, but have pushed the boundaries of possibility by finding their way past the blood-brain barrier in humans, as well as in cells and the bloodstream. Plastics are made from ethane, a waste product of natural gas fracking processes, and combined with thousands of chemicals infused with a toxicity that disrupts endocrine disruptors and causes cell mutations that lead to cancer. So what’s the fix? Scientists propose green chemistry as a solution for creating environmentally friendly alternatives to plastic. Environmental justice activists and legislative advocates argue that regulations are necessary to either minimize plastic toxicity or replace the material with alternatives altogether. Private industries that rely on plastic for operational and production processes position containment and robust recycling programs as a practical solution. Today I joined Judith Enck, President of @beyondplastics, and Karenna Gore, Founder and Executive Director of the @centerforearthethics, at @unionseminary for an eye-opening and inspiring free talk about the new book, The Problem with Plastic: How We Can Save Ourselves and Our Planet Before It’s Too Late. Judith Enck is the professor of my Beyond Plastic Pollution class at Bennington College (online), located in Vermont. The class is an environmental policy course focused on public action. It explores the dimensions of the production, use, and disposal of plastics, including climate change implications, alternatives to single-use plastic packaging, and the need for innovation. It’s a great 1-credit addition to my Fall 2026 full-time semester schedule at @columbiasuma, @climate.base, the @climate.base Cohort 10 Fellowship, and @itsup2us Fiscal Advocacy Campaign. taken in Union Theological Seminary by @darrell_patterson

Receiving a degree in law (not a law degree) from a Jesuit academic and cultural institution is arguably one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. The Master of Studies in Law (MSL) in Corporate Compliance degree is a specialization master's program that prepares program graduates for leadership roles such as Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) or General Counsel (GC). I completed my program in August 2025 and am currently applying my learning across various contexts at Columbia University, where I am pursuing a Master of Science in Sustainability Management. Learning the foundations of U.S. law and how to design compliance programs finds a critical nexus point where sustainability goals and programs establish science-based targets (SBTs) to realize progress towards adapting to and mitigating impacts from global climate change. This convergence point is arguably the most critical objective of my current programmatic learning, which I am hopeful will translate to meaningful change. taken in Fordham University School of Law by @darrell_patterson
