I noticed that this article I wrote 13 years ago is getting traction due to all the recent posting and coverage of the new Carrie miniseries.
I still stand by what I wrote. In fact, many of my points about how this 2013 film improves upon the problems I have with the original applies to the new miniseries as well.
Please give it a read.
Long live Carrie White!

MAD GOD is a visually stunning passion project from special effects maestro Phil Tippet.
This film has no dialogue and no narration to explain what's going on, and it's all stop-motion filmmaking.
He worked on this movie off and on for almost thirty years.
Imagine those early Tool music videos mixed with the aesthetic of The City of Lost Children or Dark City. Throw in some Cronenberg body horror and some early Pink Floyd-style music.
This really is a film unlike any other, and it deserves an audience.
I recommend watching it zoned out on Nyquil like I did. It's such a unique cinematic experience.

I finished watching the new Mike Flanagan miniseries based on Stephen king's 1974 book CARRIE.
Flanagan is known for making unique and powerful series with a great ensemble cast.
For me, he hasn't missed yet.
Flanagan has made The Fall of the House of Usher, The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club.
Obviously he isn't afraid to update classic works from literary giants like Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson, and now Stephen King.

CARRIE has been made and remade and sequeled a few times now. But this new version is truly an amazing experience. They have 8 one-hour episodes to delve into the story deeper than ever before. This is the only adaptation that is actually structured like the book is, with interviews and news stories from the survivors bookending the story. They show backstory, flashbacks, and events with other characters from the book that a two-hour film doesn't have time for.

Flanagan likes to use some of the same actors in all of his series. If you're a fan of his work then you'll recognize Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Rahul Kohli as the English teacher, and Kate Siegel as the interviewer Adelaide. Each of them have appeared in all six of his miniseries so far.

Summer H. Howell does a phenomenal job as Carrie. She's in almost every scene, and perfectly conveys the awkwardness of being the bullied outsider. She is luminous and believable. And I loved the 'new' scenes with her that aren't in any other iteration of this story.

The rest of the cast is stellar as well, with lots of intentional casting of actors associated with other horror films. Matthew Lillard is the school principal, known for his role in the original Scream film. Heather Graham is Chris Hargensen's Mom, known for roles in From Hell and Scream 2. Amber Midthunder is the gym teacher, who battled a Predator in the recent film Prey.

I really enjoyed the reunion of SIX of the actors from the Battlestar Galactica reboot series. Three of them play relatively major characters, and three of them have a very brief cameo in episode 7. Those actors are Michael Trucco, Tahmoh Penikett, Katie Sackoff, T (cont in comments) taken in Milwaukie, Oregon by @darren_linder

Truly one of my favorite horror movie double features. I love it because part 2 picks up literally moments after the first movie ends, and continues the story on the same night. So it really does tell one longer seamless story.

While the original film is relatively bloodless, the sequel has far more gore and kills. John Carpenter wrote and executive produced the sequel, while Rick Rosenthal directed it.
1981 gave us so many great horror movies!

Years ago the Academy Theater showed these as a double feature on Halloween night, and it was one of the best cinema experiences of my adult life.

Starting my favorite month for movies with this creepy little film from 1981.
Somehow I'd never seen this before.
A decent supernatural film.

We just had a twelve day in a row run of events, and today I worked the Cosmic Tripster party at Grand Lodge. We had three sold out shows at Crystal Ballroom in a row as well. I'm pretty sure that I interacted with the entire population of Oregon over the last twelve days. I'm delirious and exhausted and seriously peopled out. I'm going to hibernate and sleep for 15 hours.
Caffeine is a wonderful thing. As are owls.

On Monday night we wrapped up another concert season at Edgefield with the sold out Jack Johnson show. What a perfect concert to end the season with. A highlight was him singing "Willie got me Stoned (and took all my money). Thanks to all of my friends who work wicked long days to make these concert go off smoothly.

Tuesday was my birthday.
Charisse Renee made me an amazing five course dinner AND a chocolate birthday cake.
This was amazing beyond words.
It was definitely the best birthday dinner I've ever had. Thank you so much.
Check out the menu!

Here's to another year. 🎉🎊💞
