My last three LA Marathons.
Each had their challenges.
All driven by community.

2007: It was a new course - Universal to Downtown. I was naive, overly confident, and pushed harder than I could handle. Fortunately a @myteamintraining coach found me, brought me back to life, and helped me finish the race. All I remember from the finish was paramedics rushing toward us, and his white shirt that read ‘Coach Elliott | Team In Training.’ To this day I am incredibly grateful for Coach and what he had done. It was life changing, however at that moment I decided to give up on running all together.

2011: At this point, running was behind me, and I was doubling down on cycling. But around that time one of my crews had found an interest in the sport, so with great hesitation I decided to lace up again. With a revamped course (Stadium to Sea) and plenty of time off, this was my opportunity for redemption. Yet the weather was so bad that day that the streets were flooded and early stages of hypothermia set in almost instantly once crossing the finish. But we persevered, kept the pace super sexy, and finished with a new view on this whole running thing.

2019: Due to a lingering knee injury, I woke up Sunday morning knowing I would start the race, while understanding this could be my first DNF (Did Not Finish). Within the first 5k, the pain had come back and I had slowed to a jog. Along the way I ran into an aR teammate that was down for some company and doing all the things the course offered. Basically, eating all the snacks (including pizza 😍), and drinking all the things (beer, chai, everything), while chatting the entire way. I’m fairly confident that if it wasn’t for @vongchong, I wouldn’t be going back to NYC with one of the heaviest medals of my collection.

Around this time in 2012, @bessz5 walked over to my desk at @zenithww and said ‘I just hired a guy from LA, you’re gonna love him!’ I remember thinking to myself ‘We’ll see Bess, not everyone from LA is cool.’ Then I met @uncle8en. We connected instantly over having matching LA Dodger flat brim 59FIFTYs, while loving the Lakers and old school hip hop.
.
But it didn’t stop there. He had also recently moved to NYC and was part of a crew of LA natives that were taking the city by storm. Shortly after meeting Ben, he invited me out with the crew. I remember that night like it was yesterday, because it was like meeting my long-lost extended family. They took me under their wings and showed me a side of the city I’d never seen before. These guys became my NYC lifeline - they’ve been there through the thick, the thin, and the wicked.
.
At the beginning of the month, Ben got married. I have never seen him so happy, and I am stoked that he found an amazing partner. Dini, welcome to the #CaliFam, we’re happy to have ya!
.
Ben, you changed my life, and I am incredibly grateful. Thank you both for including @cecemos, @jonnyyusonny, and myself in your festivities. Can’t wait to see where your lives take you!

Didn’t do much in Vienna outside of run, eat, and look at funky buildings.
.
In 1977 Vienna’s mayor invited Friedensreich Hundertwasser to design and build a residential complex that would standout from the rest. Hundertwasser was against the idea that buildings should be built with straight lines or conform to societal norms. Therefore he designed a structure that would encompass the “Forestation of the City” and be inhabited by humans and plants with a mix of mediums. Also as the construction would require the removal of the area’s existing greenery, he planned for everything to be restored on the building’s roof.

The project was completed in 1985 and has stuck to the original ideals proving that people can live with uneven floors, irregular layouts, and spontaneous vegetation. #gamechanger
.
History Cred: A guy that didn’t look like a tour guide, but a disheveled local.

On January 11, 2017 @mk_byrnes, @bonafide_bonvivant, and I went on a 2 mile run from our office at Y&R to a party. Although we had all set goals of being active through that winter, the real reward we were anticipating prior to the run was the party’s free beer and the possibility of winning their raffle. However the run went so well that the party turned into our launch pad for ‘Y&R Fit Club.’ (MK also won the raffle ☘️)
.
Since then membership has grown, workouts have diversified, and corporate recognition has been received.
.
We went from 2 miles being a challenge, to tackling 5Ks, trail races, and even half marathons. But today I was able to witness a race that made each of these amazing humans marathoners.

I am so proud of you.

@michaelpaulbelazis (on guitar) and I met in Siem Reap 5 years ago. We had heard from a hostel mate of an amazing Indian restaurant that was tucked away in one of the city’s side streets with a mural of Mahatma Gandhi inside of it. So the next day we went on the hunt. It took most of the morning and a good chunk of the afternoon, but we found it. Turned out to be my most memorable meal in Cambodia. Since then our lives have taken a few twists and turns, but 5 years later we’re still alive and enjoying every moment. Mike, great catching up! Travel safe, keep eating, and catch ya in a few months.
