Meet the postdoc studying a problem that's stumped physicists for over a century.

Vincent David studies turbulence in the solar wind, the stream of plasma flowing out from the sun, one of the rare things in astrophysics that spacecraft can measure directly instead of from a distance. He also used a professional development award to take a quantitative finance course, just because the math overlapped and the curiosity was there.

Her research question: how does AI know what a student really needs?

Postdoc Hee Jeong Han works at Dartmouth's Center for Technology and Behavioral Health, building Evergreen, an app that reads behavioral data to figure out what a student needs and when, then offers support through conversation. It's already in the hands of real Dartmouth students, not sitting in a lab.

Cobalt. Magnets. Batteries. One postdoc is connecting all three.

Thom Chaffee studies the magnetic properties of cobalt minerals in the Dartmouth Mag Lab, work funded by the Department of Energy that could shape the batteries used in renewable energy. He recently won his department's award for outstanding service and funding to attend a teaching conference this summer.

Meet the new @dartmouthgsc president 👋

Kelly Wan is a PhD student studying the Wnt signaling pathway, a process cells use to communicate and repair themselves. When it goes wrong, it's behind nearly all colorectal cancers, and Kelly's research is focused on finding new ways to treat it.

She grew up in a small town in China, where she saw firsthand how much access shapes a person's path. That's part of why she wanted mentors of her own, and why she now wants to be that person for others.

This year she's president of the Graduate Student Council at the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, working to make sure grad student concerns, like housing, mental health, and international student support, actually get heard.

When she's not in lab, you'll probably find her paddleboarding or kayaking at the Ledyard Canoe Club on the Connecticut River.

Cystic fibrosis makes the gut a rough place to live. He's fixing that.

Sarvesh Surve is a sixth-year PhD student in molecular and cellular biology. His research evolves gut bacteria so they can survive in the cystic fibrosis gut — work that could become a new probiotic therapy.

A Dartmouth postdoc just settled a debate about your ancestors' feet.

Guarini alum Luke Fannin filmed wild mangabey monkeys climbing trees in Côte d'Ivoire and found their midfoot bends almost exactly as much as a chimpanzee's ankle. Different body parts, same job — and it helps answer a long-running question about our early ancestors' feet.

3 weeks camping on a Yukon icefield, in the name of science.

Jacob Chalif '21, a Guarini School master's student, spent three weeks on Canada's Eclipse Icefield drilling ice cores to study wildfire smoke, pollution, and a warming climate — some days it got so hot his team had to work at night instead.
