POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

@athletesforpalestine 🇵🇸

I haven’t met anyone that’s visited Palestine and not been changed by the experience.

In April 2022 I visited Palestine as a volunteer for @skate_pal . In my month there I befriended many people, from young kids at the skatepark to elders far out into the occupied West Bank, each one with their own horrific story under military occupation.
The everyday reality for Palestinians living under Israeli apartheid is enforced subjugation to an ongoing 75 (+) year colonial project. It is the every day subjection to unjust and indescribable violence from both Israeli soldiers and settlers who carry out this violence with religious zeal. It is the dehumanisation of a proud people under a regime that completely strips them of their basic human rights. In light of this, underneath the physical everyday reality of occupation is an unwavering love of life. One I vow to never forget.

I have long since advocated for the transformative and unifying nature of skateboarding ever since I fell in love with this thing 20 years ago. Skateboarding gives us a home, a foundation to build community. It is a catalyst for self empowerment and for connecting people across all walks of life. Transcendent of race, religion, gender and age through all the facets that make a life a life - love, passion, empowerment, community, curiosity and play. I was moved yet heartbroken to hear of stories from skateboarders I met there, to hear how skateboarding gives them a sense of meaning and community - a brief escape in momentary liberation & a sense of freedom from brutal occupation.
They shouldn’t need skateboarding to liberate them from these atrocities - they shouldn’t be happening at all. Occupation is not safety for anyone and it only has one real outcome - catastrophic loss of innocent civilian life. It is not for me to decide how peace will come to the region but the taxes we pay our government in the UK are complicit in these crimes. You have a say and you can take action. Use your voice for those that no longer have theirs ❤️🖤💚🤍
