Lethargy 🪑🪑 installation / performance

What if your body no longer belonged to you? What if your posture, your pain, even your unconscious state ceased to be your personal experience and instead became a construction defined by others?

In the 19th century, at the Salpêtrière hospital, neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot constructed the image of hysteria. His patients - victims of violence, socially vulnerable women, the ill, and those simply considered “inconvenient” for society - became living exhibits. Their bodies were photographed, classified, and displayed. Trauma was transformed into a visual symptom and scientific evidence.

My work Lethargy is the first part of a research project exploring how systems of power, institutions and social structures shape and enforce an ideal of the ‘proper’ woman on the body. 
At the centre of the performance is the pose of lethargy, taken from the historical atlas of hysteria created at the Salpêtrière clinic. Lethargy was described as a state of “suspended will,” in which the body is ready to accept any imposed configuration.

In the project, this pose is embodied as an impossible figure: a suspended body. The loss of agency becomes the condition of its visibility. 
Who decides what form, what position, what version of yourself you must adopt in order to be seen, recognized, and considered “correct”?

This week was amazing…
