After its critically acclaimed run at London’s Arcola Theatre, The Reckoning is hitting the road in 2027.

Inspired by real witness testimonies gathered by Ukrainian journalists from survivors of the Russian war in Ukraine, The Reckoning brings one extraordinary story of survival, trust and truth to the stage.

What might an epic for our time sound like?

This October, join us at Senate House for an evening of conversation, performance and new writing exploring the development of Songs of Solidarity.

The project asks what happens when one of the oldest forms of storytelling meets one of the defining experiences of our time: migration.

Hosted by Dash Arts’ Artistic Director @burton.josephine as part of her Practitioner in Residence tenure, the evening brings together Josephine, Professor Katherine Harloe, Professor Fiona Macintosh of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama, and writer @boixleo

The conversation will be woven through with new material from the project, offering a glimpse into how lived experience, academic research and poetic imagination are becoming a contemporary “polyphonic epic”.

Songs of Solidarity is a new interdisciplinary theatre work by Dash Arts and PROJEKT UTOPIA, written and performed by migrants and drawing on ancient epic traditions to tell stories of displacement and belonging.

In the latest episode of OffScript, @burton.jospehine talks to Afghan singer and composer @elahasoroor_music about leaving Afghanistan, arriving in London, and finding her way back to music.

For Elaha, music became a way to reconnect, find her voice and build a new creative life. Their conversation explores the power of art to create connection and community.

This is the second episode in our Songs of Solidarity series, created with @weareprojektutopia. The project asks what an epic for our time might look like, bringing stories of migration, displacement and survival into conversation with ancient epic traditions.

What does it take to reclaim your voice?

In the latest episode of OffScript, @burton.josephine is joined by Afghan singer and composer @elahasoroor_music for a deeply personal conversation about music, migration, survival and resistance.

Elaha began her career as a celebrated musician in Afghanistan before being forced to leave the country. In London, she found her way back to music, using it to speak about the lives of Afghan women and the realities of displacement.

Speaking about the risks she faced, Elaha shares:

“I could get killed for it. I was scared for my life.”

The conversation explores the power of music to say what other forms cannot, the inspiration behind her latest album Our Freedoms Must Be Won, and her collaboration with @kefayamusic

This is the second episode in our Songs of Solidarity series, a new Dash Arts and @weareprojektutopiaproduction exploring migration, displacement, survival and the stories we tell to make sense of them.

THE RECKONING IS CROSSING THE ATLANTIC

This October, The Reckoning comes to New York for a special preview as part of the Ukrainian Cultural Festival.

Drawn from verified survivor testimony of Russia’s war in Ukraine, The Reckoning brings one man’s story of staying in his village outside Kyiv to the stage. Dash Arts’ Artistic Director Josephine Burton will bring newly adapted scenes to New York, performed by Ukrainian actors based in the US, ahead of the show’s full North American tour in 2027.

As part of the event, Josephine will be joined by Peter Pomerantsev, co-founder of The Reckoning Project, for a conversation about the testimonies behind the work and the urgent importance of documenting the realities of war interspersed with some excerpts from the play.

What does it mean to protect, preserve and reimagine a culture through art?

Next Monday, Dash Arts’ Artistic Director @burton.josephine joins a special conversation at the V&A to mark the opening of Sacred Treasures from Kyiv.

Bringing together artists, historians and cultural voices from Ukraine and the UK, the evening will explore the richness of Ukrainian art and heritage, its influence on contemporary creative practice, and the vital role culture plays in how we understand the past, present and future.

Josephine will be joined by: @tetyanafilevska, Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine;@olesya_khromeychuk Director of the Ukrainian Institute London; Gordon Seabright, Director of the Horniman Museum; Konstantin Akinsha, art historian and curator; and Professor Katherine Harloe from the Department of Classics.

As Maria puts it:

“It’s very much a piece which speaks to contemporary experience of migration, which really is something that is going to touch us all, if it hasn’t already, in the next 20 to 30 years.”

How do you create an epic for the modern world?

In the first episode of our new Songs of Solidarity mini-series, Dash Arts' Artistic Director @burton.josephine and Artistic Director of @weareprojektutopia Maria Aberg take us behind the scenes of the past 18 months - from researching ancient epic traditions with academics to listening to the experiences of people who have migrated.

What does it mean to make something new from stories that have travelled across centuries? How do you make space for many voices instead of one? And what does “future-making” have to do with epic storytelling?

Hear from Josephine and Maria, alongside voices from the project's Oxford R&D: Leo Boix, Sabrina Mahfouz, Saili Katebe and Anna Sulan Masing.

Join Dash Arts and @instituteofclassicalstudies this October for Songs of Solidarity: Rewriting the Epic for a Migratory World - an evening of conversation and new writing exploring how epic storytelling can speak to migration, displacement and belonging today.

Hosted at @senatehouselib as part of @burton.josephine Practitioner in Residence at the University of London’s School of Advanced Study, the evening brings together Josephine, Fiona Macintosh and poet Leo Boix.

The conversation will be woven through with readings from new material created during the development of Songs of Solidarity, offering a glimpse into how lived experience, academic research and poetic imagination are becoming a new, polyphonic epic.
