The war is over, but a soldier’s body refuses to forget.

This September, “pulling the trigger” comes to Amsterdam Fringe Festival @amsterdamfringe.

A performance about memory, responsibility, and the choices that continue to live inside the body long after the moment itself has passed.

A year ago, the piece only existed as a question and a few pages of notes. I felt excited and intimidated. The distance between where I was and where I felt the work was asking me to go felt enormous. But I am stubborn :)

After months of creation, performances, conversations and growth, we’re bringing “pulling the trigger” to Amsterdam in its fullest form yet.

We can’t wait to share it with you!

This was the first stage of research for “pulling the trigger” at @p.a.r.t.s._ x @rosasdance SummerResidencies.

To be invited to this space, to be able to work and create every day, and to feel so seen and so safe in my search was so special and huge in ways I couldn’t even imagine. I am immensely grateful for this opportunity.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you
to Jelle Wabeke and Aska Hayakawa for their willingness to join me, for their trust and generosity;
to Joris @lungo_nbona for documenting our process with such care;
to Izah @izah.hankammer for giving us home and support for those 2 weeks;
to @jipdijcks for sharing his voice for our explorations;
and to my family (in all meanings of the word) who hold space for me and believe in me even when I don’t.

While talking to others about this project, I sometimes feel like I’m looking for the right words to make sure that I will be heard and understood. Sometimes I remind myself that the work will speak for itself.

Sometimes it feels like I’m walking on eggshells, sometimes like I want to scream from a rooftop. Sometimes I have no idea where it is going, and sometimes it feels crystal clear.

And yet, we are just at the beginning. With all my heart, I hope to be able to see it through. taken in P.A.R.T.S. by @dasheraa

cigarettes are bad for you
but I have to admit, they do make a great theatrical device :))

That was my pre-selection round at @oym.event Maastricht.

I almost chickened out and didn’t go, cause I told myself I wasn’t ready. You know that voice - I haven’t been practicing properly, I’m gonna embarrass myself blablabla. So happy I’m much better at ignoring it, what a buzzkill. (and maybe being ready doesn’t always mean feeling ready 💅🏼 iykyk)

Just like last year, some things worked out and some things didn’t. But man, did I have an amazing time – just like last year.

It’s so interesting to observe what a difference a year makes for your dancing. Of course, there’s no shortcut around putting in the hours (I could really use some more, for sure). But you also grow in ways that are harder to measure. You live, you learn, you change – and your dancing changes with you.

Lit my way up to top 12 this time✨

Thank you @oym.event, @nederlandsedansdagen, @droshah1, @kajoinboi, @meel0llll, all the judges and dancers that spilled their hearts and their artistry onto that dance floor. It’s such an immense joy and honor to be a part of this 🙏🏻 taken in Maastricht, Netherlands by @dasheraa

Have you ever heard someone say that with time we don’t really change, but become more ourselves?

I think for me it’s becoming less about becoming a certain version of myself and more about making room for all the parts waiting to be recognized, remembered, seen.

The silly, the fancy, the crying, the clumsy, the tired, the ambitious, the overthinking, the hurting, the curious, the hungry, the lost, the lonely, the scared, the adventurous, the insecure, the dreamer, the sensitive, the jealous, the comparing, the generous, the angry, the searching, the quiet, the loving. And everything in between.

All allowed.

Oh, how I love life!!!!

Thank you for sharing this journey with me – from closer up or further away, however long or briefly 🙏🏻❤️ by @dasheraa

Our @amsterdamfringe journey has come to an end. I look back at this moment and everything that brought us here.

A little over a year ago, I came out of the first residency with a few scene sketches, lots of questions, and quite a few ideas about where I wanted this work to go. I just didn’t know how I could actually get there. But here we are!

4 shows. Two sold out rooms and two very full ones. Almost 200 people in the audience.

Considering the amount of panic I put myself through about ticket sales beforehand… “I defo could’ve been a little less dramatic but whats done is done”.😅 @doctor.running

But hey, you don’t know until you go through it. It’s easy to laugh at yourself once you know how the story ends. Doesn’t mean the uncertainty wasn’t real while you were inside it.

Much more than the numbers, I keep coming back to what happened in the room. The silence. The conversations afterwards. The impressions, questions, emotions and sometimes tears. Thank you for meeting this work with so much openness and for meeting us somewhere that isn’t easy or light at all. You’ve given me back so much more than I dared to hope❤️‍🩹

THANK YOU @amsterdamfringe for giving this story a home, and to everyone at @mezrab_ – especially Barbora @bar_p01 – for taking care of us. This place has a huge heart and I’m very grateful we got to perform here.

And to the people who carried this with me:

Marko @markeaux for literally carrying this story on your shoulders. For your dedication, generosity, trust. For continuing to teach me so much and becoming my friend along the way❤️
Nikki @n.schuurrman for the absolute light magic.
Ilya @sinkopa_ for sound worlds that still give me goosebumps every time.
Hans and Kasja who helped us bring the work to a whole new level yet again.
Nastia @ugli.uglom.ugol for all your support in these past weeks.
Yulia @actuallyyulia and @edward.amsterdam for teleporting our set and floor.

And because apparently premiering my own work at Fringe wasn’t enough, I also got to be one of @queer.quark choreographers. Grateful for the opportunity to contribute and witness how it all came together!

We’ve come this far. But it’s not at all where it ends✨ taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @dasheraa

A few thoughts and questions behind “pulling the trigger” – a work that began with trying to find a human behind the uniform.

This week we are bringing the piece to @mezrab_ as part of @amsterdamfringe:

September 10 - 19:00 (Premiere) & 21:00
September 12 - 16:00 & 19:00

Come sit with these questions with us.

thank you for listening

a few more things that landed for me today:

• it's really not about the tickets and the "sold out"s, it's about massive pressure and expectations I've put on myself, which I think is kind of unavoidable once you enter this world.
about a feeling that I have to get the work reviewed RIGHT NOW, cause if I do – it means I'm being taken seriously by the field and if not – oh well 🤡
a feeling that I have to make sure I've extracted every opportunity and future chance out of this that I possibly can. the "now or never" feeling, because it is "THE platform"!!!

• all of that started to steal my joy. I started to steal it from myself, to be fair. joy of the work itself; joy of being a part of this wonderful festival, of a community of many amazing people making it possible; people who bring their artistry, their hearts, their hard work. a chance to share this experience with all of them and to learn from each other.

• I don't want this bullsh*t to take this experience from me. I don't want to wake up the day after it's over and feel like I've missed it completely.

• I also got tired of playing the game. of "selling", of all this calculated, curated, strategic, beat-the-algorithm-shit, looking appealing, choosing my words.

• I made the work because it hurt. because I felt that I really needed to and I really wanted to share it – otherwise what's the point? taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @dasheraa
